Yes sometimes they route more north or south than the usual UL607 depending on if theres a favourable wind over the atlantic. You can see the north atlantic winds via this link: http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/jetstream.asp

Today hundreds of a/c routing west over london, lots of air france so maybe you'll get to see their new A380 ;)

When the meteo conditions are right, winter season provides an opportunity for low contrails.
Captured on Jan 7, Dash8 G-JECK of Flybe at FL240 enroute DUS-LGW on UL608.

Hello,

17/01

Tried to do some contrail spotting but the clouds were winning the battle against the blue sky. Probably I missed some traffic due the clouds.

This is only what I saw in 40 minutes ( 15.20-16.00):

Germanwings A320 D-AGWH CGN-MAN FL380 on UL608
Emirates B777 A6-ECW LGW-DXB on UL607
Ryanair B737-8AS EI-DPV FMM-STN UL608
British Airways A320 G-EUYP SOF-LHR FL360 on UL608 to LOGAN
OO-VMX Piper PA-28-161 Warrior III

Greetings,
Kristof

Absolutely Collimation Eyepiece! Laser need everything to be already ok. It's only a way to check collimation. Cap works like the eyepiece but the eyepiece is much better

i DC11 i've had this dilemma, i've used cap without barlow and produced a good result:

Image

then tried same approach with Barlow attached and get this:

Image

So tried out a laser which didn't work too well:

Image

so i've ordered a Cheshire eyepiece as this will tell me whether i should invest in a top of the range Barlow as i will have absolute confidence that my mirrors are spot on.
I will let you know how i get on as its delivery has been delayed in snow

The difference between a pretty good barlow (televue) or a cheap one (soligor) is really evident, especially if you use the barlow for taking because because it's known that human eye can't see all image's imperfections like you do when you take a picture. BTW a collimation eyepiece works like a cap but it has some things in it that helps collimating the scope.
One more important thing to say about barlow is that you can use them only in really clear day with no turbolence and heat waves. Ask james for any other information (it has a tele vue barlow and i think also a soligor)

Have a good evening,

Mattia

Hi,

I also noticed aircraft contrailing low on Saturday. I looked out to see this aeromexico 767 at only 24,000ft with contrails:

Air Berlin A330:

I'm having a bit of a hard time at the moment with picture quality. I think its due to the weather though.

Regards,
James.

Hi dc10, nice shots! You seem to live near some busy airways. Are you using the barlow lens for these photos?

Hi contrailwatcher
All the photos i put on this site in the winter are taken with the barlow(REVELATION ED 2"2BL).----------------i have about 5 upper airways around me---------------the best time is a.m with aircraft going east AIRWAY UL607+UL9-------------------i need to traval to airway UL613 which is about 10 miles east of me---------i can seen the aircraft from my home but i have some trees in the way-----------------i also have a airway for GERMANY to the USA but this is also many kms away----------------and i have AIRWAY UL620 which has some dutch movements which come you way un20/ur8.
I have also have movements for LHR and LGW.
THEIR ARE TIMES WHEN THE AIRWAYS ARE NOT BUSY.

All the best
