When I am as rich as the Sultan of Brunei.
He just wrote out a cheque for his, because he liked it.
Interestingly it is in the colours of Royal Brunei, he has (had) many other aircraft including A310s in his private fleet, but we were told the A340 was in Airline colours so his people would think it was part of the Airline, and not just another toy.

Like many National Airlines, Royal Brunei does not really have to make money, it is to "show the flag", a sort of prestige thing.
When we were there, the Sultan used to often come out to the Airport, which would then be closed for all other Aircraft, even scheduled Royal Brunei passenger flights, while he went for a training (joy) flight in his personal A340. 8O
