Fuel plane crashes05/31/2007 The plane did a 180-degree turn to the right. The left wing broke off and caught fire. The rest of the plane went into the ditch. The 3,000 gallons of fuel did NOT explode. Both the pilot and co-pilot were able to escape without any serious injuries.
The Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair was a Douglas DC-4 / C-54 converted into an air ferry by Freddie Laker's Aviation Traders (Engineering) Limited (ATL), allowing it to carry 25 passengers and five cars, loaded at the front. Only 21 were made.
I'm old enough to remember seeing this plane at Ostend in the early 1960's.
With this crash I think no one of the type is flying anymore.
Somebody knows more?
