Spotten at SXM ? Now or never !

We all (should) know those amazing final approach pictures taken at SXM, where you can almost touch those wide-bodies while lying on the tropical St Maarten beach. Truly, a spotters’ paradise… (search Airliners.Net if still necessary)

Well, if you have always wanted to go there, but had not enough money, the (perhaps) once-in-a-lifetime window-of-opportunity is … now. See below:

Highly recommended !!! (I was there myself in 1994)

Yes, but 393 EUR just for spotting from a beach?

OST is cheaper...

Maybe cheaper, but you won't find me watching planes while drinking a cocktail on the beach in OST.

BTW not only the landings are impressive, apparently you have to do special take-offs to avoid mountains, look at that picture

It is from a beach not far from OST that I saw an AF Concorde taking off at low altitude in the mid-80es.

Well, the SXM beach is surely not closed (yet?) : even on the latest added pictures of SXM in the Airliners.Net database (e.g. taken in July/August 2003), I still see people standing on Maho Beach...

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/390825/M/

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/380878/M/

But expansion plans are ready, i.e. lagoon landfill for the terminal and apron for sure, and maybe at the same time lengthening of the runway too (nowadays, a 747 at SXM can't be fueled up enough to make it back to Europe ànd still take off... - this is then done at a 'combined' stop, e.g. CUR in the case of KLM). So, will Maho Beach remain intact, or be sacrificed together with some seaside landfill for a longer runway ?...
