Brussels Airlines in 2018
Article in De Tijd today: Gustin wants to cut costs further with 10 to 15% ''in the coming years''. In 2017 they were cut by 5 percent. Sn saved over the last three years 15 percent in operational costs (personnel, fleet harmonisation, better airport process management). He wants to reduce costs in as he puts it a smart way: e.g. the Thomas Cook acquisition solved SN's Saturday afternoon challenge of planes being idle hence leading to a higher productivity. Not more details or examples are provided but I would assume there is still some benefits to be had from the integration in the LH group?
He attributes the relative retreat of low cost thanks to a.o. SN's aggressive approach. Passengers are willing to pay a bit more for the extra service SN offers but the price delta with pure price focused players (like Ryanair) can not be too wide. This strategy puts downward pressure on profitability hence the cost profile needs to mimic to a certain degree that of low cost companies.
He is targeting 10 million passengers in 2018

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
Last year I tried to buy a ticket for BRU-MXP, using my Romanian debit card. It was not possible. I called the Customer Service and they told me I can do the transaction online only with a Belgian or Italian card, for the route. they recommended me to go to a tourism agency when I'll be in Belgium. Alternatively I could have the reservation done over phone, but then an extra tax of 8 EUR (if I remember well) would apply. I bought a Ryanair ticket instead. Less hassle.
Bernard Gustin would better pay some attention to problems like this. We are very soon in 2018, after all. It's getting ridiculous...

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
To be honest, I have booked SN flights for years with my Estonian (eurozone) cards, this has never been an issue. So not sure it is on their side

Do they fly to Dar es Salam as the article says????
Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
Indeed, he probably didn't understand well and doesn't know Marsa Alam...
Though in general funny that even international media is now focusing on the 10-15% cost saving for the coming years, while that's just part of a continuous effort which has been ongoing for years. It's part of the day to day business to be as cost efficient as possible (which doesn't always mean just taking the cheapest, but as good quality for money as possible taking into account the necessity of low costs when competing head on with LCC's) and in addition to that strategic long term projects such as the 'new' A333's which are more fuel efficient and can take more payload on longer missions than most of the current A330's (except SFX which is already of that generation). At the same time major investments are done in the further development of the product, such as the all new long haul cabin (including real Premium Economy seats) and the extension of The Loft. Those are big investments that only pay off after quite some time. So it's not just blind cost saving, it is one element of the whole picture and if we want it or not, it's a crucial one when operating as small airline in such a competitive market like Brussels.
Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
In the January issue of B-Inspired Bernard Gustin states in his welcome word: "... (in 2018) we also will offer increased flight frequencies to our existing African destinations ..."
That seems to confirm the rumours that they will use an additional A330 this year (so start using one of the 'new ' A330 when the old are not yet gone). Unless they drop/shrink some other desinations of course ...
Any news/insight on this?

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
Brussels Airlines and Eurowings integration plans were set to be laid out by end 2017, but the Air Berlin insolvency intervened and more urgent matters required all the attention of the "planners".
Nevertheless, the Belgian airline is already working on integrating its IT and fleet planning systems into that of parent Lufthansa.

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
Brussels Airlines intends to hire some 750 people in the course of 2018, of which 400 for their new operations in Dusseldorf, the rest for Brussels: currently some 3,500 people are on their payroll, so clearly they aim for a massive expansion of their workforce (and logically also the anticipated production).

Tonight, SN flight from/to Hannover is performed with Cityjet AVRO RJ85 in place of BMI ERJ145!
Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
In the same article, Bernard Gustin mentions "new aircraft interiors, with better seats.."(sorry, I don't remember the exact wordings, I just read the article quickly).
Does this mean the "new" (ex SQ and CX) A330's will have a completely new aircraft interior, different from the actual seats in the A330's?

Duke

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
Indeed, the introduction of the all new cabin (new seats and design in all classes and the introduction of a real Premium Economy class) will kick-off at the end of 2018. Although there will not be many to get the interior this year, 2019 will be the exciting year on that levelairbuske wrote: ↑10 Jan 2018, 20:42Yes , the A330 will have a complete new interior.Duke wrote: ↑10 Jan 2018, 20:27In the same article, Bernard Gustin mentions "new aircraft interiors, with better seats.."(sorry, I don't remember the exact wordings, I just read the article quickly).

Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
Anyone knows why SN is still hiring contract pilots through contractair? I thought some SN management pilots on here claimed it was only temporary to accommodate Avro to Airbus type ratings?
Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
I don't know who said that, but this is already the case for years and will probably remain the case for many years to come. It's simply to cover peak summer production and holiday periods of permanent pilots.
Re: Brussels Airlines in 2018
Because they still have a shortage of pilots for upcoming summer season, positions they cannot fill from the holding pool as the list is not long enough to accomodate all flight crew requirements for the summer.
