AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
Air France-KLM outline plans for Martinair, Transavia
Possibly Transavia base at Brussels Airport
Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines board members held a meeting on Thursday, September 4, in which they reviewed the Group's current operational status ahead of the official unveiling of their new "Perform 2020" five-year growth plan later this week. Among the core decisions taken are the phasing out of the Group's loss-making freight subsidiary, Martinair, and the repositioning of Transavia France and Transavia Airlines as regionally-based budget carriers.
Five Martinair MD-11(F)s will be phased out on an accelerated basis during 2015 and 2016.
Overall, come 2016, the Group will operate five full-freighter aircraft: two Air France Cargo B777-Fs based at Paris CDG and three KLM B747-400(F)s based in Amsterdam, compared with a total of 14 in 2013. The resulting scaling down in operations effectively means Martinair will cease to exist.
Referencing its regional passenger service plans, the Group approved recently reported plans to reposition Transavia and its French sister, Transavia France, as a unified, regional budget carrier dubbed "Transavia Europe" capable of winning back market share lost to the likes of Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet.
Beginning in 2015, Air France will transfer its entire European leisure market to Transavia Europe with initial foreign bases to reportedly include Porto, Lisbon and an unspecified German airport. According to France's La Tribune newspaper, 15 cities are currently under consideration with Madrid Barajas and Brussels National among them.
A full disclosure of Perform 2020 is expected on September 11.

Re: AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
Transavia at Brussels would be a good thing, with presumably a large choice of flights to France.
EasyJet, Vueling, Ryanair, Transavia : it's high time to think again about setting that low-cost terminal at Zaventem ....

About Transavia Europe, we plan to start as early as next April with the first three bases outside France and the Netherlands, and six the following year. We will not say where, not giving any indication to the competition.
In total, Transavia should have more than 100 aircraft by 2017 [against fifty today, Ed], with growth prospects beyond if things are going well. With that, we would become one of the major players in the low cost in Europe. It's a beautiful project, for which we plan to invest 1 billion euros over the next five years, or even 1 billion more later!

Re: AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
I don't see Transavia in BRU now anymore.
They had their opportunity, but now VY and FR have closed the market.
Transavia should base in FRA, MUC, DUS and Berlin if they want to perform.
There is only LH and Air Berlin there, the market is wide open and waiting.
I think that FR might acutally start some German bases at the larg airports in Germany.
Didn't they just announce flights to Berlin a few days ago?

Re: AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
CAPA analyses the move of AF-KLM, especially in relation with Transavia, and is not optimistic.
The Transavia decision comes too late and too little: in the meantime, Ryanair and easyJet will have expanded much more. Furthermore, an expansion of Transavia in France will need the approval of AF pilots, who will go on strike on the issue tomorrow: they want the same pay for all pilots of aircraft with more than 110 seats in the AF group. Thus such an approval is far from certain.

Re: AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
So Martinair will be just flying AF and KL branded aircraft with the sticker operated by Martinair, not getting how MP is being shut down here just their own liveried aircrfat wont be flying? a
And what about the two 744 currently flying for Etihad cargo and Kenya Airways cargo by MP are the contracts ending?

Re: AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
MP already operates the former KLM 74Fs, thus this won't change. The reason why MP won't be shut down is due to traffic rights, which MP has and KL doesn't have. At present, only 1 74F is flying for EY, which is one of the former KL aircraft. The "Safari Express" doesn't exist anymore (was discontinued after KQ got its 77Ws) thus no 74F is flying for KQ at the moment.globetrotter wrote:So Martinair will be just flying AF and KL branded aircraft with the sticker operated by Martinair, not getting how MP is being shut down here just their own liveried aircrfat wont be flying? a

MP does have 1 or 2 BCFs doing nothing, but according to some rumours, it's cheaper not to fly them then to fly.
BTW MP will not fly the AF birds

MP have also dropped quite a few routes Abu Dhabi, Doha, Sharjah which was their hub in the Gulf, Delhi, Guangzhou, Guayaquil but they have started Guatemala and resumed Entebbe this month, not sure which other new places have been started or resumed.

According to a poster at another board the 744BCF will be kept and an ERF phased out, any confirmation?

Re: AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
The "repositioning" of Transavia is the cause of the present strike of some Air France pilots.
A non-striking pilot disagrees with his colleagues :
Yes, we are privileged. A co-pilot beginner earns on average 75,000 euros per year. As commanders on medium-haul, we gain between 150,000 and 175,000 euros gross per year with a guaranteed minimum.
Our benefits have been built over our successes, such as free access to flights as passengers on medium-range - we just have to pay the taxes. We do not have exclusivity contracts, and even if it remains restricted, we can have a second job (outside of competition).
For me, I have now reached the top of the scale, I benefit from 45 days holiday per year (besides weekends and official holidays)), I'll be able to take a fairly good pension from the age of 60.

Re: AF-KLM to close Martinair and reposition Transavia
KLM's CEO Camiel Eurlings has enough of the strikes and other protests against his plans with Transavia: he quits (as per direct!).

Quite the opposite in fact!!! He has been forced to leave. He lost his credibility with the employees a while ago and it seem the board followed the employees.Passenger wrote:KLM's CEO Camiel Eurlings has enough of the strikes and other protests against his plans with Transavia: he quits (as per direct!).

Remarkable comment from Arnold Burlage, senior aviation writer in the Netherlands, about the way Eurlings was dismissed:Lysexpat wrote:Quite the opposite in fact!!! He has been forced to leave. Transavia plans to open a base in Munich with four or five B737-800s operating from there in 2016.
