Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
Suposing he did it, what's you're opinion ? Or shall we wait till it has been broadcasted ?
For the members not familiar with Tomtesteron. It's about Tom doing all kinds of weird stunts. In previous seasons he hypnotised a shark, he ran (and succeeded) the"marathon des sables", he tried to swim accross the Channel, he tried to build his own plane, .....
One of his latest stunts was to take a seat in a 737 and do some touch and goes. He did get some basic aviation training.

"some basic" is a little understatement imo. He did a theoretical exam, soloed in a twin (according to the media), gained his medical license... During the flight, he had an instructor on his (left) side all the time.
I don't get the media hype about it. There was no increased risk at all imo. It's a lot of people with a big mount screaming in the media without any applicable knowledge...

I was wondering when this topic would start
Lots of discussions in the flemish newspapers during the weekend and yesterday!

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
i don't get it either. besides he doesn't need half the stuff you learn to get your ATPL for the stunt and lets be fair... getting the ATPL is very easy, it just costs a lot of money.
i could see problem with having non flight crew (camera crew and friends) on board during the tough and go's if the flight is A P flight.
anyone a flight number? i know OO-JAQ was used at 23/05/2011 for training

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
Hi,
In these times of economical crisis and with a strong-eco feeling I think this show crashed somewhere..
A piper or Cessna would have done the same..
Why a big 737 without a pax just for the fun of the show ?
Why ? Because JAF will earn cheap/free adv. for this ( probably ) and the TV show looks more spectacular with a plane the most of the viewers are used to fly in ...( and would even be given free for the show )..
So simple.. money ... like always..
Don't forget it's TV, a show.. so if he really flown the plane itself you will never know.. it's a show
and the show must go on.. indeed even all the given practice COULD be just for the show..
Don't say it is, but it's quite common in these similar 'reality' shows, the shows are mostly less reality than that they supposed to do...
But hey, I will enjoy the show altough I wouldn't gave my permission to do it in this way,
TOM.. hope you liked it, .. I guess I even prefer this show then the submarine episode later this month haha..

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
Hi all, for a few years i've try to get a jumpseat flight. No response from the belgian airliners! When you are a Vip you can fly an B737!! When you have connections...my dream still goes on...goodnight!
Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
you don't know an airline crewmember? if so just ask them to make arrangements so you can fly with them.EBAW wrote:Hi all, for a few years i've try to get a jumpseat flight. its the only way since neither crews nor airlines like unknown people on jumpseats
Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
Do you have the money for a private ride of a few hours on a B737 ,or a private ride in the Soyuz ? Some people have ! ! ! !EBAW wrote:Hi all, for a few years i've try to get a jumpseat flight. I don't see any problem with it, there was an experienced pilot/instructor in the left seat and an extra crew onboard
Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
F4.1 INTRODUCTION
To fly as pilot-in-command (PIC) or co-pilot of a
multi-pilot aeroplane you must have the appropriate
type rating endorsed onto your licence. In order to add
a type rating to the licence you are required to complete
training at a Type Rating Training Organisation (TRTO) or
Flight Training Organisation (FTO). An up-to-date list of
JAR-FCL approved training providers can be found
on the CAA-SRG web site - www.caa.co.uk.
Pre-requisite conditions for training
An applicant for the first type rating course for a MPA shall
provide evidence that the following requirements have
been met:-
a. have completed at least 70 hours as pilot-incommand
of aeroplanes;
b. hold a current and valid multi-engine Instrument
Rating (Aeroplanes). This requirement applies to a
first MPA type rating. For subsequent type ratings
the Instrument Rating may be renewed if necessary
during the type rating course and skill test. A UK
QSP(A) who has held a Green Instrument Rating
within the preceding 5 years is deemed to hold a
‘current and valid’ Instrument Rating.
c. hold a certificate of satisfactory completion of
a multi-crew co-operation (MCC) course (this
requirement is not applicable to those who have
attended a TRTO course which includes MCC).
For full details on the MCC Course and MCC credits
can be found at Section F10.
d. have a valid pass in the professional flight crew
examinations at ATPL level.
Knowledge of Aeroplane Performance
Applicants for additional type ratings to Professional
Licences are required to have demonstrated knowledge
of aeroplane performance appropriate to that type.
a. Licence holders who have passed the ATPL level
JAR-FCL performance examination are deemed to
have demonstrated the appropriate knowledge for
multi-engine turbine aircraft defined by EU-OPS as
belonging to Performance Class A.
b. A QSP(A) who meets the eligibility requirements
of the FW (ME) Accreditation Scheme as specified
in Section D3.3(A) is credited the JAR-FCL
performance examination at ATPL level.
c. Holders of UK national professional licences who
have previously passed national examinations in
Performance Group A will be deemed to have
satisfied the appropriate aeroplane performance
knowledge for the addition of any aeroplane type or
class rating.
d. UK national licence holders not meeting the
criteria at (c) and who are required to demonstrate
knowledge of aeroplane performance for an
additional multi-pilot type rating, are required to sit
the JAR-FCL aeroplane performance paper at ATPL
level if they subsequently wish to add a multi-pilot
type aeroplane rating to their licence.
F4.2 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ADDITION
OF A MPA TYPE RATING
For rating issue you must:-
a. Provide evidence of having completed a course
of training at an authorised Type Rating Training
Organisation (TRTO), following a syllabus
recognised by the JAA, including the following:-
b. Pass a Licensing Skills Test (LST) conducted by a
JAA authorised Type Rating Examiner (TRE);
c. Complete the required landings in the aircraft (with
the exception of ZFTT)- see Flight Training Minima
below.
d. Pass a theoretical knowledge written exam as part
of the TRTO course.
I somehow doubt that he really completed all of the above requirements in a couple of months .

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
I believe the problem is that the 737 is a multi-pilot aircraft (MPA). It needs 2 licensed pilots to fly/operate it. It is true you can do flight training on a multi-engine aircraft. But most light multi-engine aircraft are single pilot certified. So only 1 licensed pilot has to be on board. A trainee license also counts as a license, if he is signed of by his instructor.
So, in order to fly a 737 (or any other MPA) you need a type rating. And to get that rating, you need what pressman wrote. You can add a type rating to a PPL as well.
Was this legal? I doubt it, but I assume JAF will have investigated this.
Was this safe? I believe it was. He received decent training to fly this thing correctly and was backed up by experienced instructors and crew.

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
I am just waiting for that joke of a son of a malfunctioning politician - who became by this a malfunctioning politician himself - to make a statement that it was illegal.
And 1 minute later the program makers release evidence that it was a set up.

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
According to what I've seen in "De Laatste Show", the plane used was OO-JAX, which was brand new at the time of filming (delivered new from Boeing in November 2010 according to airfleets.net)cnc wrote:i don't get it either. besides he doesn't need half the stuff you learn to get your ATPL for the stunt and lets be fair... getting the ATPL is very easy, it just costs a lot of money.

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
I can't follow the arguments of the wiloo spokesman,
Tom Waes just did what every pilot has to do before he goes to line training except his training before that point was just the most essential things to do his stunt (which is a terrible word to discribe it)

Re: Tomtesteron (Belgian TV viewers only)
Except he didn't have the requirements to be there in the first place , 70 hrs PIC , MEIR and ATPL theory completed . Hence in all likelihood an illegal flight .

to be honest this is a storm in a glass of water... but it's getting the attention they probably aimed for
