It is indeed a cooling system, TCC Turbine Case cooling, nicknamed the birdcage, it works in cruise and send "fresh" air taken from the compressor to cooldown the turbine casing, in order to reduce the clearance between the turbine blades and the turbine case....increase the engine performance and reduce fuel consumption....

It is not working during TO , to avoid blades tips rubbing....

I was a bit misguided and was focusing too much on the tube work just rectangular to that.
( out of desperation I even looked at APU's...and that is really desperate  )
The basis of my thinking was quite OK: heat resistant (stainless) steel. So in contact wit hot air. I was thinking about bleed air systems. Hey, I do also have to work between the posts ;)
By the way, I have seen such tube work been manufactured in the UK.
Seems simple, but it isn't. As you all can see, each tube has a different shape. Some are flattened more or less to give space to the auxilliary equipment. I can assure you that the manufacturing, welding , bending, and measuring and Ultra sonic and/or X-ray welding checks makes these tubes costly affairs.

I am glad that this excersise by Desert Rat forced me to go deeper into details.
Next ! ( but no APU's please :| )

Thanks for the info's khun Regi... ;) ...

Note as well, that the tubing for the LPT has a rond shape, but the HPT tubing is kind of rectangular.

you got my "industrial eye" attention immediately because these parts are made in a very special manufacturing method. For those interested in carbon fibre parts, read this:
http://www.compositesworld.com/articles ... ng-methods
Despite all the inside information, 1 item is not mentioned: delamination !
But positively it sheds a light on the best way to make carbon fibre parts, cured in their mould in the autoclave. ( I mentioned this already some years ago referring to the manufacturing problems of the B787, but beside of 1 interested private message, nobody seemed to have noticed it ) To avoid distortion, they use a special tool steel Invar® that sees very little deformation under different temperatures ( comparable with Ni-resist with a Ni content of 30%: very expensive stuff :!: ) http://www.invartools.com/
The article also sheds a light on the temperature problem. They want to use one of the best "plastiques" around: polyimide ( this is NOT polyamide = nylon ), known under the trade name Vespel® ( > Dupont ). Sadly enough they cannot use PTFE ( Teflon® ) because this is mechanically too weak. And PEEK doesn't have the high temperature resistance. But if they get there, it would be possible to make pressure die castings in Vespel. Wonder how big such a mould would be  They would have to split it up in many segments.
Anyway, thank you for the picture Desert Rat.

Brake wear indicator indeed....when the pin gets flush with body....it' time to replace the brake.

When it's a new brake, it can be "reshimed" to gain some more cycles...(800?)...but after the shiming, the heat pack has to be completely replaced by a new one.

Then again ,a life cycle, removal and reshiming,etc,etc,... 8-) ...
