Will Surinam Airlines Ever Fly Alone?

Post by KLMCityhopper »

Ever since its creation, Surinam Airlines has been flying with KLM. IT was even created by KLM! In the past, since routes, like to the Caribbean and to Miami have been flown without KLM help, yet to Amsterdam was always flown with KLM. Last year, KLM gave SLM an old 747-200 that no one wanted, so that SLM could fly alon to Amsterdam, yet the flight is still code shared. Ironically, most of Surinam still prefers to fly with the KLM aircraft, even when they codeshare. The plan is to get SLM independent in the the future, yet there is no clear plan. Independence was needed to get lower prices lower, since the route was one of the most expensice in the world, since the 2 airlines had a monopoly till now. New airlines are also being created, yet I think SLM will always need a backbone, being their founder, KLM.

SLM is not owned by KLM, they are merely jointly operating the Paramaribo-Amsterdam route in a (Joint Venture), wich the KLM does also with NW the US and with AF to Paris etc... Most airlines do this, it's nothing special.
The B747-200SUD was sold by KLM to SLM so that they could operate their part of the code-share (SLM had alot of problem getting the bird in the air, but that's another story).
They will have to stick together on that route, because it is going to be liberalized, and therefore a solid relation between SLM & KLM can go against the competition better the the 2 airlines on their own... (like it is done all over the world)
