Potential 777 Freighter customers ?

Post by Andries »

As you can read in the news section, Boeing has announced a freighter version of the 777-200.

What airlines will order these aircraft ?
Maybe Singapore Cargo ? Then they could operate an entire fleet of 777's ...

I think that United might buy some a couple of years down the road when they are finacially stable. United used to have a fleet of DC-8Fs and then later DC-10-30Fs. I could see United restarting this part of their business.

United Cargo DC-8F: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/535274/L/

United Cargo DC-10-30F: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/169039/L/
Onward and Upward...

That would be a tough one to call. The plane is bound to be very expensive (for a dedicated freighter) especially at a this time when most airlines are not in sound financial footing. IMO i think the cargo aircraft market at this time can be well supported by the number of planes sitting in the deserts and/or by conversion of passenger planes into freighters.

Is it cheaper to convert passenger planes into freighters or to purchase new build freighters?? My guess is that the cheaper option may prevail but the $$$ for a 777LRF may be too steep for most airlines at this time.

Just my $0.2.

Cheers,

Walter.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG's cargo unit, the world's largest freight airline by tonnage carried, said it may buy planes from Airbus SAS, abandoning its exclusive reliance on Boeing Co. as it expands in Asia.

Lufthansa Cargo currently has only Boeing's MD-11 and 747- 200 aircraft in its fleet. The company will evaluate both the freighter version of the Boeing 777 and the Airbus A380, which will both be available in 2008, said Lufthansa Cargo AG Chief Executive Officer Jean-Peter Jansen.

``Both aircraft are offering improved conditions as far as operations and costs are concerned,'' said Jansen in an interview in Singapore today. ``So we have to look into both aircraft to see which is a good solution.''

Lufthansa Cargo, Korean Air Co. and other airlines are carrying more freight this year as demand for semiconductors, mobile phones and other goods from Asia are growing in the U.S. and Europe. Lufthansa Cargo is expanding in China, where it says air cargo traffic may grow at an annual rate of between 15 percent and 20 percent the next few years.

Last month, Lufthansa agreed to set up an airfreight venture with southern China's Shenzhen Airlines Co. as exports from China grow. The venture will serve Chinese and Asian routes when it starts operations as early as in March next year.

Asia accounted for 45 percent of the cargo carrier's sale last year, Jansen said. On Oct. 31, it started three weekly cargo services to Guangzhou in China from Frankfurt.

``An aircraft type like the 777 is a very good fitting for markets especially for markets with direct operation and frequencies,'' Jansen said. He declined to say how many planes Lufthansa Cargo plans to purchase or when would buy them.

Boeing, the world's second-biggest commercial aircraft maker, will base its freighter on the twin-engine 777-200LR, Boeing's longest-range passenger model that will be delivered for the first time next year. The freighter will carry 222,000 pounds, or 101 metric tons, and have a range of 5,980 miles with a full load.

Airbus, the world's largest commercial aircraft maker, will compete with the A380 freighter, which will carry a payload of 150 metric tons and have a range of 6,463 miles fully loaded. The aircraft will also be introduced in 2008.
