Strange Finnair Destinations

Post by C_J »

"There will also be non-stop flights from Amsterdam to Kuusamo, from Milan to Rovaniemi, from Zurich to Kittilo, and from Paris to Ivalo, Kittilo and Rovaniemi. Some flights to Kittilo (Lapland) will operate with the MD11."
Isn't this a bit strange? All the towns in Finland are very small. Is there a market? Maybe for wintersports?

Hey,

These flights will be for bringing tourists to "Santa Clause". Since Santa Clause lives in this region "Lapland". And with Christmas coming soon, this is the ideal time for those special flights ;-)

I can understand the flights, but why to different airports, not one - do the dutch prefer kuusamo or the italians Rovaniemi?

The "midnight sun" phenomenon is only noticeable in the summer month's, when the days are longer over here. In Lapland and all the North regions the sun won't dissapear behind the horizon.
In the winter months the reverse is true. The days will be shorter here, so in the northern regions the sun won't come up at all.
But the beautiful nature, santa clause and al the nice things over there will bring tourists to Lapland, espacially when Christmas time comes...

Lapland is very popular from the UK, 19 (including Humberside) airports have flights this December, most of them more than 1. Operators include Transun and First Choice. Some flights are 2 days running to allow short breaks

Maybe Finnair has struck a deal with some travel agencies, and that could be a reason why they operate "illogical" routes. The travel agencies will be organizing the rest of the trip, and chose Finnair to do the flying part of what may be a "Christmas special", offered by the same travel agency.

Yes, Stormvogel I read that too, when I was reading this:
Finnair is adding a 2nd flight 3 days a week from Helsinki to Bangkok in peak periods from Dec11 to Jan07 and Feb09 to Apr02 for a total of 10 flights a week. The additional flight departs Helsinki on Wed/Fri/Sun and Bangkok on Mon/Thu/Sat.
Finnair is increasing winter Florida service by adding a 3rd flight this winter from Dec11 to Apr02. The additional flight will operate on Mondays alongside the existing flights on Thursdays and Saturdays.

And btw, people who like to read about mishaps in aviation that's the place to go.
Vietnam A321 lands without nose gear
Collision at Manchester
Air Deccan A320 tire burst
ANA 737 returns to Nagasaki - drop in cabin pressure
American emergency landing
Angola 747 run off runway
JAC Saab returns to Kagoshima - because of a mechanical problem.

All that on only one page!

Before the Sabena closure, there were large newspaper adds, showing all the Sabena destinations. Some names were so strange to me, I had to take an atlas. And can anybody tell afterwards what the profit was for Sabena to fly to Madras?
But let us stay positive and believe that Finnair knows very well what it is doing.
