Montreal Mirabel Airport

Post by Humberside »

On Sunday night this airport closes to passengers. Cargo flights will continue. Recently the airport has only be used for passenger charter flights, including the Air Transat weekly summer service from Gatwick. All passenger flights will transfer to Trudeau (Dorval).

I've submitted this as news

Personally I would have kept the passenger side open as a LoCo/Charter terminal. What are your views and memories?

Hello Humberside

I don't know anything of that airport, but a bit weird.
I do know that every Sunday there is a 310 flight from
Air Transat to BRU. It's leaves at 09:05(correct?)@BRU
so it would arrive there about 13:00LT(guess),so that is
in the day,but aren't there any nightflights from other airports
to Mirabel?(BRU-Montreal @ --3---7 DEP 09:50 and 09:05(?))

Everything seems to be well explained on the airports site : http://www.admtl.com/admmaintext.jsp?id ... Transfer=1

At least some people with a long term vision on how they want to deal with airport facilities in the neighbourhood of a capital city ...
I guess we sometimes miss this kind of things here in Belgium ...

Greetz,

Leopold

Mirabel Airport is now considered the Holiday Airport.
In the 1960's, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau called yet another example of largesse to Quebec - the Montreal-Mirabel International Airport - a project for the 21st Century.'

On 2004 OCT 31 the final passenger flight will take off from its tarmac, and its once-supermodern terminal will be converted into a training centre or a casino or a shopping centre. What a bloody waste of money.

Mirabel's sad story is a tale of federal Canadian blinkered Quebec policy and political paralysis.

Leopold, there are enough training centres, casinos or shopping centres in Belgium!

I'm not telling the contrary ; as read in an article : "Mirabel is a mistake. That's for sure. And a waste of money, lands and most of all, moral. Keeping the flights at Mirabel would have been a mistake too. More and more airlines would have left. We would only be left with Air Canada at Mirabel; Canadian is almost gone, with only ONE code-share flight with Alitalia."

But it's sometimes better to admit mistakes, and point out to other directions ...

affirmative, Leopoldm.
But no politician will do that.
Only other politicians will point out to other directions ... It takes a generation to wear them down.
It is sad that such decisions are to be taken by such people, isn't it.
I admire the people who decided over Schiphol. With that airport they created a great airline. One goes with the other.

Mirabel was never great, it never created something in aviation....
And mind you, tour operator airlines, do not create, they 'exploit'*. And that word was reflecting also some mentality in SabEna!

These operators are always on look out for opportunities to 'exploit', they will drop one destination if they can make more money elsewhere.
I have known the era of safaris in W. Africa before the 'big' tour operators came in, I know what I'm talking about. Once run down they turn their back.
