Last days for Boeing 757

Post by bits44 »

A sad day for a great aircraft, but one door always opens when one closes.
The renton plant has enough 737 orders to keep them going for years.

End of probably the best plane ever built by Boeing.
Thumbs up for them :thumbsup2:

The 757 was a superb aircraft. I am disappointed that I never had chance to fly on it :(

@Comet

This is only the closure of the prod line. There will be plenty of time to fly on a 75, particularly in the UK where every man and his dog fly 'em.

Concordino - the airlines I fly on never have them. Airlines I have flown on seem to get 757s after I have stopped flying on them, like Icelandair and Finnair. You are more likely to see a Finnair Airbus or even an old MD8* in the UK than a Finnair 757, unless you go on a charter when Finnair are doing holiday contracts over here.

I appreciate that SN BA do not fly the 75 but with the choice of:

Continental
BA
Monarch
Thomas Cook
TUI/Britannia
Iberia
Air Scotland
My Travel
First Choice
Excel
Turkmenistan
(probably more I can't think of )

flying into the UK you should find an operator to carry you aloft. If you take the first option then once you get over the pond your options really open up with all the US majors flying the 75.

If really desperate you can always try to blag a ride on on a DHL or UPS bird!!!

Hmm If i'm not mistaken BA grounded it's last 757's this year and First choice would ground the last ones after summer season.
But you are right it are still a lot of carriers! I must say the Iberia's 757's are very nice to fly with.

If you mean the are already grounded, then you're wrong. BA's 757's are currently still flying... (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/699226/M/ or http://www.airliners.net/open.file/698758/M/ )
Tough I think you're right since their A321's are being delivered...
I must say the Iberia's 757's are very nice to fly with.
Indeed, flew on them ACE-MAD-BRU ('00) and had great flights. In that time Iberia had still a great (free) service, excellent rides!

As you all know the 757 is an aircraft I hold very dear to my heart. It will be a very sad day in the aviation world when the last 757 rolls out those hanger doors in Renton. I love the 757 for many reasons, but the biggest reason is the nose of the 757. It is perfect. Not too rounded and not too pointy.

I remember the last time one of my favorite aircraft went out of production. It was the Avro RJ. I was so disappointed. I feel the same way now. Luckily, I know that the 737 and 7E7 will do a fine job replacing the 757.

It's very sad that the B757 line has come to an end, but the Boeing 757 will be around for many more years, so plenty of opportunities for us to fly on that graceful bird.

I have read on A.net that NWA wanted to get some extra B753's, but because the productionline is closed now, NWA is banging their head to the wall now that they didn't order more when they still had the opportunity to do so.

But we will see the B757 for a long time, so just enjoy that beautiful bird.

It's indeed sad to see that the B757 prod. line will close, but we all knew that this would come in the near future don't we ?

The B757 is indeed a great aircraft, but there's an end to everything. And as previously said, when one door closes another one opens.
Airlines I have flown on seem to get 757s after I have stopped flying on them, like Icelandair and Finnair
Then fly them again, to get on a 757 !!!

There are plenty of B757's around and they won't dissapear so quickly, so don't be too sad Louise, you'll still be able to have a lot of rides on B757's.

I would have thought there may have been scope to develop the 757, in the way the 747 was developed into various models. The main competitor to the 757 is the A321, in my opinion, and the fact that there is some market for twin engined short/medium models surprises me that Boeing have not developed the 757. Continental use the type on their BHX-Newark service, the type is probably ideal for such services where the 767 and 777 would not be filled.

I didn't know BA were retiring theirs. The 757 used to be the mainstay of the domestic shuttle services between London and places like Edinburgh and Glasgow. I haven't seen one in MAN all the time I've been going there, it's usually the Airbus, the 737 or the smaller regional types. I remember once passing EDI on the train to Glasgow just as a 757 lifted off beside the train and flew low over us. It was a BA example in Landor colours, and it was a superb sight.

The A321 isn't the only "competitor" for the B757 . Both planes have different caracteristics. Even if they both take approximately the same number of pax, the A321 has a range which is nearly half the one of the B757 (compare the A321 with the B757-200ER).
On the other hand I suppose that the A321 is less costly for short haul operations, hence the competition on that level. BUT the B757 is a great aircraft for long haul as well. the B757-200ER or even the B757-300 have a great range and are able to fly very long routes with a relatively thin traffic demand. It could suite the point to point vision of Boeing.
The reason why the B757 isn't "so" successful anymore is probably due to the fact that many airlines don't fly those type of routes I just mentioned (except for CO). Many airlines believe in the hub theory where you require big aircrafts for the longhaul route while having feeder flights around your hub.

It could suite the point to point vision of SN as well in order to set up or enhance some african/north-atlantic routes... provided such a vision exists to enforce SN's own brand on these routes (io code sharing with 3d party players or just abandoning this market to the benefit of externals)
Of course this is hypothetical assumptions...but I just can't believe intercontinental network for SN is synonym with money drain. OK I think this is not the good forum to tackle this subject (forum over Birdy's integration into SN should be more appropriate)
