Remembering the 22/03/2016 terror attacks

Post by Passenger »

Brussels Airport will remember 22/03/2016, but on a rather low profile manner.

Meanwhile, the Archives department of the City of Brussels has digitalized all condolences and support messages after the attacks:

Back in 2016, when I was still based in Vienna, but frequently flying to Brussels for business, I was scheduled on a BRU-VIE flight for the morning of 22.03.2016. However, as the business meeting I flew over for ended very early, I re-booked for a flight on the evening before. I even felt lucky because due to a (not so rare) delay of the evening SN flight to VIE, I had the opportunity to shoot some pictures of the freshly-presented #SNMagritte even before it took off for its first flight.

The next morning, already back in Vienna, I was woken up by a constant flow of messages and calls asking if I was okay. I turned on BBC World News - and for the next two hours, sat there in horror and watched the terrible events unfolding...

I remembered I initially planned to be at the airport way earlier than the departure time of my late-morning flight - and could have been in the terminal at the very moment the bombings took place. It seems my guardian angel must have worked extra hours...

May all the victims rest in peace - and may we never forget 22/03/2016!
Best regards,
Viktor

Karen Northshield, one of the most severly hurt victims from 22/03/2016, participated partially to the Bruges Triathlon today. She had chosen for the swimming part, where she was assisted by a "normal" triathlete because Karen hasn't recovered yet. Example: she wears headphones to cut off loud noises. There was a doctor swimming next to hear because she's very vulnerable for infections.

New book: Unbroken (EN) / Herboren (NL)

On the fateful day of 22 March 2016, Nidhi Chaphekar, a cabin crew manager, was assigned a flight from Brussels to Newark. One of the most shocking terror attacks took placeat the Brussels airport the same day, killing around thirty-two people and injuring over three hundred. Nidhi was gravely injured, and her photograph, taken minutes after the blast, became the face of the terror attack.

Navigating through Nidhi’s life and career as a flight attendant, this heart-wrenching story opens with the horrific incident that shook the lives of all those caught in itsvortex. The aftermath of intense trauma and rigorous medical treatment sees Nidhi emerging as a real-life superhero. She survived despite sustaining more than twenty percent burns, multiple fractures, crushed bones, ruptured eardrums and being in a state ofinduced coma for twenty-three days.

Narrated in the form of a daily journal, painstakingly penned by her, this true story of grit and willpower will reach out to millions of people across the globe with itsenduring message of positivity and the infinite ability of the human spirit to triumph against all odds.

And one more time thank you Gregory for your message at 06h22 that day to postpone our meeting till 10h30.
Having a coffee at the Starbucks that morning would have been a bad idea.
