Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was on full alert around 14h30 today, for United UA-71 Amsterdam-Newark (767-300ER) returning to AMS. Apparently 12-15 passengers and cabin crew suffered from "...oxygen shortage..." (press reports).

The Dutch "Onderzoeksraad" (investigation council) is investigating why 15 passengers on board United B767 became unwell due to lack of oxygen. The flight returned to Schiphol when over Ireland.

What a good idea, to divert to BRU in the middle of a STRIKE of the baggage handlers ! *facepalm*

Baggage will remain on board until the plane returns to AMS. No problem whatsoever!

There was a fire in a train at AMS Schiphol Railway station. No victims, no damage to the airport, fire is out thanks to rapid intervention from the AMS Fire Brigade.

KLM had to cancel 34 intra-Europe flights on Wednesday afternoon because of a multiple software failure, all caused by a power failure.

Lots and lots of problems at AMS/KLM the last week(s): a major power failure at the baggage system and an IT problem at KLM resulting in many delays, cancellations and many -many- missing bags. But somehow, the Dutch succeed in keeping it 'silent'. Imagine this happening in BRU, the media would go all nuts... But in AMS... it stays 'under the radar'...

But the problem is much more general: according to people working at baggage reclaim in BRU, AMS is the worst performing airport when it comes to connecting flights and missing bags. Every single KLM flight, many bags are missing.

KLM published the information in real time, and the news was published in all Dutch aviation sites. And in Aviation24.be:

Obviously, they reported it, but I'm talking about the 'general' media. They make less 'fuss' about it.

The Dutch government, owner of 70% of the shares from Schiphol Airport Group, has decided who will be the next director: Dick Benschop. He's an ex-politician and an ex Shell executive.

Power outage disrupts Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, flights cancelled and delayed
https://www.aviation24.be/airports/amste ... d-delayed/
Meanwhile, dozens of flights have been cancelled. On the second day of the Easter Holiday there...

KLM called in extra staff to the airport, but because there were no trains to the airport, everyone came by car. So there was a traffic pile up. Thus no extra staff. Thus hours of waiting time.

Reports in the press and social media suggest that airlines charge for rebookings.

Power outage at AMS this morning. Many flights cancelled and delayed.

https://www.aviation24.be/airports/amste ... d-delayed/

Update: "The rest of the day, we are dealing with the aftermath of the power outage. Out of precaution, some flights are cancelled. Other flights may be delayed. For the time being, everything is focused on getting as many travellers as possible on their place of destination."

KLM Statement after the power outage at AMS:

Amstelveen, 29 April 2018

Consequences for KLM of a power outage at Schiphol

Due to a power outage this morning, Schiphol decided to temporarily close the airport completely. Schiphol is now open again but check-in systems could not work and staff could not reach the airport.

As a result, KLM has already had to cancel 40 European flights and passengers have to take serious delays into account.

KLM is doing everything it can to help its passengers as well as possible. Passengers are rebooked on other flights and informed through various channels. In addition, KLM advises its passengers to keep an eye on their flight information.

The initial regional power failure, at 00h45, has caused little damage. The backup power system at the ATC Centre (Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland) took over almost immediately.

However, the ICT system at AMS - like the check-in computers - failed to start up. Because it's the start of the Easter Holiday, that failure soon caused a major passenger pile up, with queues till outside the departure terminal. Authorities then decided to block all access roads and railway lines to the airport, to avoid that more people can reach the airport.
