Eurowings is one of the fastest growing airlines in Europe, with the backing of Lufthansa of course. But they don't publish their monthly figures.

If someone wants to do the exercise, it should nevertheless be possible to calculate by comparing the figures given in the Lufthansa press release which gives the aggregate figures for the point-to-point airlines (SN + EW) and the SN figures, and deduct the latter from the former. Any volunteer?

LH Group: https://www.aviation24.be/airlines/lufth ... high-2017/
and (more detailed): https://www.austrianairlines.ag/~/media ... E4B9F.ashx
SN: https://www.aviation24.be/airlines/lufth ... 2-percent/

Nobody? I had some free time, and here are my results for the number of passengers and for the number of flights (there is an inconsistency for the ASK)

In 2017, Eurowings transported 23,536,000 passengers (+120%) on 196,262 flights (+108,6%).

That is indeed an explosive growth. If Lufthansa could put the same effort into expanding SN as they do with EW, it would be fantastic. They are sister companies after all, and what you do for one you have to do for the other.

Be careful what you wish for! Before you know SN shorthaul could be integrated in EW....

LH's category of 'point-to-point' airlines (although that name doesn't make sense :p ) of EW+SN is now larger than for example SAS Group and around the size of Norwegian (full group) in terms of passenger numbers. That's indeed quite amazing when comparing that with just 1-2 years ago. And that's without a full year Air Berlin effect like we'll see in 2018... (it's often not realized by many, but Air Berlin used to be an airline with 35 million pax in 2011, it has gone downhill ever since but even in their worst year except 2017 it was still 29mio in 2016, that's ahead of more globally known airlines like SAS and much more than Alitalia).

Btw, SN grew by almost 17% on Europe alone and some of the growth on Africa is thanks to the new flights to North Africa and Cape Verde and 2018 will be a very nice year as well with the full effect of the HQ take-over, Avro phase-out (which took until October 2017) and a further increasing average fleet size with more A320's coming in. Considering that SN does all that out of just 1 hub, that's also quite impressive ;)

Roma Spotters Club just posted this video on their FB page of the very first Eurowings A340-300 emerging from the hangar of International Aerospace Coatings at Roma Fiumicino Airport.

This aircraft will be operated in 2018 by Brussels Airlines flight crew and cabin crew from Dusseldorf Airport.

If you take the LH figures for ASK and RPK in millions, you end up with the following figures for EW only:

ASK Dec/Dec: 25.87159 billion=+302.8%
RPK Dec/Dec: 20.86158 billion=+278.8%

ASK Y/Y: 33.955791 billion=+309.4%
RPK Y/Y: 27.389897 billion=+269.5%

l/f would be 80.6% in Dec (-5.2 points) and 80.7% cumulative (-8.7 points).

Do these figures seem realistic? They would mean EW was very small in 2016!

By Comparison, SN's ASK and RPK respective figures were 1.5 billion and 1.2 billion for Dec and 19.4 billion and 15.2 billion for the year.

Since the A343's are going on the Belgian register, can we assume they'll come to BRU for delivery before heading to DUS?

Are we sure they’ll be registered in Belgium? It wouldn’t be the first time a Belgian operator operates aircraft on a foreign registration.

From another thread:
tolipanebas wrote: 02 Dec 2017, 18:18 Registrations for our first 2 Airbus A340-313 deployed from DUS will be:
OO-SCW
OO-SCX
In line with the Sabena-based registration system in use at SN.

So it seems that they'll be placed on the Belgian register.

That's why I wrote that there is an inconsistency. Thanks for confirming my views. From the passenger figures, it is clear that Eurowings doubled in size in 2017. From the ASK figures, it would have quadrupled, which seems impossible.

No mention of Brussels Airlines ops on the aircraft though.

Probably a small sticker somewhere near the front door, and that’ll be about it.

Bralo20: thanks! I missed that part.

Their A330's also only have a very small SunExpress sticker on the bottom of door L1 (and on some pictures there seems to be something next to door L2, more or less the location where SN has the 'flying from BRU' logo - but it's not visible on most, so maybe they changed that). So probably this A340 has (or will get) a small SN logo in the same way.

Great, but in a few years SN will be Eurowings. LH bought the company in '09 to fence off its backyard and is now abusing SN as a trojan horse into EW.

For now there is no immediate reason to abandon the SN brand and in particular on long haul that will not come soon either. If it does at one point (short haul or full network), then it's like that. I still prefer a local division of a pan-European airline rather than a small continuously struggling airline that has little future at all but with a nice individual brand. Because that would be the faith of SN without a strong owner like LH. Would it have been different with IAG? Yes maybe, on the short term. On the long term I don't believe in quite many of the European airline brands. Yes it will take much longer than in the US because of the structure of the EU, but the harmonization in terms of airline brands will come, just wait until the next big crisis hits (and then it will be LHG that's prepared with a strong harmonized group).

Boy that Eurowings livery on the A340 look terrible!
They paid someone to come up with that? or they went to the store and the white/gray paint was on sale?
