I agree with what has been said above:
disappointing as the current situation may be, it does come at a rather convenient time to their yearly recurrent sales campaigns (am I too suspicious for thinking it got timed that way by them?) and people generally tend to have relatively short memories, meaning that by the time most ordinary customers will start thinking of booking their next city break, they will have mostly forgotten about it.
Of course, the more problematic commercial issues arise with the newly targeted market segment of business travelers, who now live a daily visualization of exactly now ryanair deals with them in case of problems. It's something which greatly undercuts their 'ever getting better program' and sets them back many many years in the minds of those people as it exposes them as an ever unreliable, inflexible, business-distorting alternative to network airlines.
I guess this is also why competitors don't bother to advertise 'rescue fares' to ryanair customers left stranded, although it would be the perfect occasion to do so at first glance: other than a good laugh and a low dig at them, it will not resound long with the wider ryanair public.
Yet I am equally convinced corporate sales teams from competing airlines are compiling all relevant data on the daily stream of cancellations for future use in contract negotiations as a way to set them apart; the prospect of having to rely on an airline canceling 1 out of 8 of their flights to/from Belgium for many many weeks in a row, is shear horror to every corporate traveler!
So far more than the short term financial hit, what is worrying about this mess for them is the long term repercussion it will have on their newly shaped business-oriented image. That and possibly also the fact this mess may very well turn out be the game changing event which will force them to fall in line with the compensation rules as from now and in future, like everybody else.
Combined with the surprise EU court ruling on the supremacy of local labor law over Irish labor law at all the non-Irish bases, one can but say this week may very well turn out to be shaping the future of ryanair in a decisive way: it may be seen as the week in which ryanair had to become an airline just like the others much quicker than ever deemed possible, including all the usual rights for its customers and staff, as well as all the financial obligations related to that for its shareholders.

This is exactly the reason why several companies in Belgium forbid their staff to fly Ryanair ( and also some other LCC )
+
that any hick up to show up at work after a holiday because of such an airline is not accepted as excuse.

I said this some years ago. See what you get now.

Which program does this airline use to organise the employee's hours?
Or has this also been subcontracted to India because of cost savings?

That would really cap it all spectacularly: an organized social action at ryanair.

We're getting to a point where one could ask the genuine question if it would be appropriate for a new CEO to step in, not so much to clean up the mess, but rather as a signal that the company takes full blame for the situation and wants to fundamentally change the way it does things in the future.
VW also ditched its boss after Diesel-gate and many banks did the same after they lost all credibility.

Meanwhile, on de VRT news site, there's an interesting opinion about the root cause of all this.
One we all know to be somehow true, but prefer not to admit because it benefits us all greatly as consumers: the irresistible urge for ever cheaper labour which is squeezing every person working in the industry (be it as pilot or as baggage handler), all for the sake of ever cheaper prices.

Ryanair is scouring Brazil in an effort to recruit more airline pilots as it faces continued difficulty in maintaining its flight schedule.

CEO Michael O’Leary said that he “did not agree” with figures reported that Ryanair had lost 140 pilots to Norwegian. How can he know where his pilots are going, when the Irish press says he lost 700 pilots?

Hi,

In certain cases FR or any other airline in that case needs to refund the hotelcosts if a flight is cancelled.
But does these extra costs have a maximum?
Can I stay in 5 star deluxe hotel and force FR to refund me or will they only pay the average price of a room...

Ryanair must reimburse reasonable costs, not 5 star hotel rooms.

Personally I rely more on Ryanair which is in general very punctual, these cancellations are exeptional, than on companies such as TUI Belgium - to not mention any names - which constantly has big delays and flight cancellations.

May I also remember you that Vueling had exactly the same problem last year ... Many flights were cancelled due to staff shortage... Medias didn't make a whole fuss about it though ... Medias love to blame Ryanair.

A cancellation of one flight is exceptional. And keeping in mind Ryanairs' big fleet: the cancellation of a few flights is exceptional. But the cancellation of 300 flights to/from BRU and/or CRL in a few weeks time is not exceptional anymore: that's a planned, organized screw up. And what is worse: Ryanair knew already for months that this disaster for passengers was upcoming.

And regarding TUI Belgium: they don't have constantly big delays. And when they have a delay, at least they try to solve the problem. How many external aircraft has Ryanair chartered last weekend to get the passengers to destination? None, AFAIK.

I don't know what media you follow, but the Vueling saga was covered by the Flemish press more then once. Bit as much as the Ryanair saga now, indeed. But then, the Ryanair saga is a zillion times bigger.

The Stockholm Syndrome is widely known. A similar syndrome, but less known, is the O'Leary Syndrome. And some here show all signs of it.

I wonder who though? However brilliant o’leary is with numbers, he is at the helm, so responsible for this mess, so he must go ... now

Aviation specialists and psychologists have stated in newspapers that by January nobody will remember this and book Ryanair again as the price is the only thing they check.

People tend to forget. Remember the public outrage and everybody boycotting Renault after they closed their plant in Vilvoorde? I think I remember their sales actually increased.

The biggest mistake in dealing with this mess was not immediately communicating which flights were going to be cancelled. So instead of angering just the passengers booked on those flights, Ryanair angered all the passengers who had booked in the coming months. But now that the list is out, only those whose flight will be cancelled are still going to be upset. The other passengers might actually feel a sense of happiness that their flight is still operating and most won’t harbour negative feelings towards Ryanair. And will happily book again one of those cheap fares.

The real problem for Ryanair isn’t this PR blunder, it’s the problem that has been exposed by it: the fact that apparently staff is leaving in droves to greener pastures

I hope that in the longer term that will mean that conditions will improve for the employees. It took a long time but the pilot shortage worldwide is here and it’s a serious one, with companies outbidding themselves on wages to attract pilots. For passengers I guess that in the longer term ticket prices will go up

If you have 6000 pilots, 700 leaving isn't a that big amount. An attrition rate of 7% is normal, the worldwide shortage does the rest.
Belgian airlines only find enough pilots because a huge bunch of retired pilots are flying as contractors on a freelance basis.
The real braindrain will, take place the day the ME3 offer European bases!
