Lufthansa in 2017
I am surprised that we don't have yet a topic on the parent company of our national airline. Let's start it now with a big news item, or rather a rumour that, if true, could change the aviation picture in Europe and the Middle East:
Lufthansa and Etihad are reportedly preparing to cooperate further, including codesharing on long-haul routes and access to the Star Alliance network, along with more acquisition of aircraft operated by Air Berlin.

Lufthansa is interested in helping to shape the Italian aviation market but is not willing to take over Alitalia (Italy) in its current shape.
Lufthansa would be interested in leasing more jets and crew from Air Berlin but said that hurdles remained to a full takeover.

I fully agree with you on that one. But is Etihad ready to fully write-off its investment?Ansett wrote: ↑05 Aug 2017, 18:26 A full take over of Air Berlin by LH would mean a near-monopoly in Germany. Interesting to hear that LH might however be interested in reshaping Italian aviation. Imho, based on the sabena experience, and in order to prevent a sabena-like scenario, the major shareholders should let the airline go bankrupt and create a new one from scratch, like SN Brussels Airlines, with competitive wages and working conditions. It's hard, but unavoidable in the current context. They could still keep the name Alitalia on the planes (and add something like "International" in the statutes and legal documents).
For the name on the documents, why not use Nuova Alitalia.

Lufthansa coming closer to Etihad, despite the latter's ties with Air Berlin?

Re: Lufthansa in 2017
Why? Less competition means higher revenue possibilities AND more competition opportunities. Time for others to role up their sleeves and start the fight
Re: Lufthansa in 2017
To be fair, the prices are already quite high: a flight between BRU and FRA for July next year is already more than 100 euro's one way. That's quite a lot of money for a student who wants to go and spot some planes in FRA. I guess they can ask what they want as they are the only company on that route. On such routes, you'd need a LCC to combat them and make them lower their price.
Re: Lufthansa in 2017
Yeah sure, but that is just an example to show that they ask a quite high price so many months in advance for an economy seat and this is in my opinion only because of the fact that they have a monopoly on the Brussels-Frankfurt route. If Ryanair or Easyjet steps in on this route and asks only 50 or even 75 Euros, LH will have to lower its prices in order to get their planes filled. If I could choose between 2 or 3 airlines on the same route, I'll probably go for the cheapest unless there is only a small difference in price (let's say 5 to 10 Euros).

Re: Lufthansa in 2017
I mean that they'll would have to lower their prices if a LCC joins routes where LH has a monopoly and they start losing passengers to the LCC.HQ_BRU_Lover wrote: ↑30 Nov 2017, 12:23Why should they? 80% of their plane is filled with transfer pax...
