And they were not going to depart that evening except one to TXL. Hence this discussion. Not saying they all should be in the air but maybe some of them ?
Most of the aircraft are leaving around 21.30 to the nightstop station, so the army of airbuses that you saw where going somewhere later.

But let's do the thing logically, actually it very easy to see how many aircraft are overnighting in Brussels,

No wet lease aircraft are staying overnight in Brussels

Flybe: both Q400 are abroad (NTE and BLL)
BMI: All ERJ145 abroad (BRS and HAJ)
Cityjet: (EDI, BHX and soon BMA)

In the Brussels Airlines fleet, the A330 are flying back to BRU, arrival between 5am and 8am

Soon, the 3 RJ100 are staying in BRU overnight (for the moment there is still one in BMA)

There are 32 A319/A320 (if we include OO-SNI)

In those 32 aircraft, 20 aircraft are abroad (TLV, LHR, MAN, LYS, TLS, MRS, GVA, BIO, MAD, LIN, FCO, VCE, PRG, BUD, TXL, HAM, OSL, GOT, CPH and WAW)

So we have 12 remaining airbuses, (actually 11 on friday because of the ERV nightflight)

To summarize there is just 12 A319/A320 and 3 RJ100 staying at night in Brussels.

On weekdays it's normal to have +10 more SN departures at 21:00 or later.

Besides that it's not that attractive for most destinations to have such nighttime rotations, it's currently also not needed. SN is upscaling it's average aircraft capacity (RJ's almost gone, soon A319's going out for additional A320's), still has some room to optimise utilisation in daytime rotations (especialy the weekends) which are more attractive in timing for leisure traffic and meanwhile they will also integrate HQ which will mean both growth to new destinations but also more flights on many existing leisure routes (and SN will sell at least some seats on most of these new flights). Not necessary to become overly enthusiastic ;)

Besides, you have to make sure you don't put your early morning departure wave at risk. Many of the aircraft that stay overnight already arrive very late, so only a few of them would allow a departure before 0:00. Then you have a rotation of easily 5-6 hours for a Southern European leisure route (and a shorter one would mean an arrival at BRU in the middle of the night, which is even less attractive). Then you need to prepare them for the early morning outbound wave starting as from 6:00. You also have to take into account that such an early morning turnaround can take a bit more time, I don't know the exact timings for the moment, but e.g. catering needs a bigger loading for the first outbound rotation of an aircraft (a partial 1-day load at the front and rear, for the 2nd/3rd/4rd rotatin of the day only a refill at the back is done, the latter requires less time and doesn't disturb cleaning and boarding as much as a frontloading does).

In addition, you would want your aircraft on the ground at your homebase once in X days for small maintenance.

Mexico from FRA with Lufthansa on 747-800
Cancun from FRA with Lufthansa on A340-300
Kuala Lumpur from BKK with ThaÏ Airways on 777-300
Ahmedabad from BOM with Air India on different type of aircraft

I have the impression that no new African destinations are added via FRA. Maybe this means that SN can expand some more in Africa and that their focus will lay there as other destinations can be booked via FRA.

Maybe a bit of topic, but I don't know where I could post this.

I was just checking out Poland on wikipedia...
I wonder why SN doesn't start more routes to Polish cities, such as Gdansk or Poznan.
There are many people from Poland living in Belgium (and NL) and the Polish economy is going the good way.
Also, a city like Poznan can attract tourists, and there isn't much competition (no KLM for instance) yet to this city. There are about 1.4 million people living in the metropolitan area.
To Gdansk you can already fly with Wizzair from CRL, but maybe there's an opportunity for SN too?
Attract transfer passengers from UK for instance.

What do you think?
Which other European cities can be linked with BRU by SN?

LOT already tried Gdansk and Wroclaw: it didn't work. And the people of Poland living in Belgium don't come from that region, but rather from Bialystok which is not served by an airport (or maybe Lublin, but still far away).

Air France resumes Nairobi service from March 2018. What about Brussels Airlines?

Remember that SN had to abandon Nairobi to Lufthansa in exchange for a new service to Accra. Nairobi is the seat of an important UN Agency, the United Nations Environment Program.

You're right André.
Those polish are coming from Poldasie region,Mazury,Mazovia (essentialy).
Lublin is at 258km/3h12 of road
Warsaw Okecie is at 204km/2h56 of road
Warsaw Modlin is at 199km/3h01 of road and
Olsztyn Mazury is 182km/2h31...

Don't forget :
=> Poland has not a good railway service (late, unregular and not safe) so Polish use the PKS service (bus company) or private bus companies to travel through cities, those trips are not expensive but loooooonnnnnggggggg

=> Bialystok has indeed an airport (Krywlany/EPBK) ,but used in years '30 by LOT,for flights to Okecie, with runways in grass, but no update of the runways since those years...

=> Bialystok city was ready to build a new airport : Białystok-Saniki Airport,27 km WNW of Białystok in the village of Saniki, Gmina Tykocin, is set to begin in 2012 and completed in 2015.[ The airport is proposed to have a runway length of 2,000 m and width of 60 m (45 m + band). It is projected to operate aircraft with a wingspan of up to 52 meters. Construction of the airport is projected to cost five hundred million zł (118 millions €) ,paid for by a combination of funding from the Podlaskie Voivodeship, the Polish Government and EU infrastructure funding. Plans were cancelled in 2015.

=> In early 2017,the regional news website Poranny was organisating a debate with Michał Tabisz, President of Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport Company, Leszek Krawczyk, Head of Olsztyn-Szymany Airport, prof. Robert Ciborowski, rector UwB and prof. Lech Dzienis, Rector PB. http://www.poranny.pl/lotnisko/a/debata ... ,11648036/

Just at the bottom of the article, they project an airport, but at 4 places, at Krywlany,at Saniki, at Żuki Kowalowce and Topolany (all -30km around the city)

=> But we had a good news 2 weeks ago ; the city of Bialystok will build a new runway of 1350m at Krywlany ,but I think it's short for Embraers and A318s... Seems to be this project : http://plus.wspolczesna.pl/wiadomosci/a ... t,12256834
Works will begin with earthworks and drainage system order. The scope of works includes the construction of a runway of 1350 m at 30 m (asphalt paved surface) and a runway of 840 m at 160 m (grass surface). There will also be built: a plate for turning planes, taxiways, parking plates. The parachute jumpers landing zone and the necessary technical infrastructure including lighting will also be established. The airport will accommodate passenger aircraft carrying up to 50 passengers. The range of aircraft is 1.5 - 2 thousand. km. Using it will be available air training centers, emergency ambulance, Podlaski Border Guard Unit and other aviation service. Completion of the investment is scheduled for September 2018. The airport should be operational by the end of 2018. The expenditure limit for the construction of the belt for 2017-2018 amounts to PLN 31.2 million (7.41 mln €).

I must admit I didn't know about India's second rank as Belgium's foreign trade partner outside EU!
If BOM proves to be so succesful, can we expect a future link from BRU to DEL soon?!

An interesting article (in French) from the African magazine "Jeune Afrique": "Brussels Airlines, Trojan horse of the Lufthansa Group in Africa"

http://www.jeuneafrique.com/mag/463866/ ... n-afrique/

SN should expand with daily, if possible direct, flights to several of its African destinations and fly to Nigeria within two years. And it may re-launch intra-African operations, even after the failure of Korongo.

The Lufthansa Group plans to expand its presence in Armenia, via its two subsidiaries – Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines – which already operate in the country.

Impressive, indeed. What actually impressed me most is the €54 for connecting flights, something that we Belgians are unlikely to use. But what a great fare for foreigners!

Way to go!

In an article in La Libre Belgique on the integration of Thomas Cook Airlines in Brussels Airlines, some guidance is given as to the number of passengers they intend to fly this year (a calendar year that is) as well as next year.

1- so far this year, between JAN and AUG, 5,98M passengers flew with Brussels Airlines.

2- for the year 2017 as a whole, they aim for 9M passengers, a growth of 17% vs last year.

3- in 2018, they'll offer 1M additional seats to the market thanks to this deal, on top of the organic growth.
