Hi Stij,
You may end up having plenty of extra free time and if you haven’t been there yet you may want to drive out to Cape Agulhas. It is about 200km from Capetown heading towards P.E. then Bredasdorp and it is the actual southernmost point of Africa, the divider between Indian and Atlantic oceans. Nothing in front but 4000km of raging seas to the Antarctica.
Nearby is the picturesque village of Arniston (Waenhuiskrans in plaaslike taal) famous for its fishermen house, of old Dutch architectural style.

And how does a Homo Aeroportus know about the place? Well, FAOB, Overberg Lugmagbasis is only 10 clicks North of Waenhuiskrans …
That makes this post more "aviation-related". ;)

Enjoy your prolonged stay.

Hi Homo Aeroportus,

Been there, done that, and took a wonderfull picture of the lighthouse.

We re planning to visit some vineyards such as Newton Johnson in Hermanus and Uva Mira in Stellenbosch.

And to stay aviation related: the last 5 days there was a bush fire around us. Huey s and Air tankers dominated the skies all day long. Even South African Airforce participated with their Puma s!

The temperature is not a problem, what is the problem are the strong wing and the snow.
Nieuwsblad reports: some passengers diverted to Gaziantep, close to the Syrian border, still there http://www.nieuwsblad.be/cnt/dmf20170108_02662650

If pax on BRU-IST-CPT got stuck for the next couple of days in Gaziantep 800km from IST (see post of @luchtzak), it might take some time to sort out the problems the other way around CPT-IST-BRU. IST is still at the top of the FR24 worst delay list, with heavy snow shower forecasts for Monday afternoon. So getting all planes back on the right airport at the right time, wil take some time. Let alone, finding free seats for all those stranded pax.

Of course I understand perfectly...that's a big problem for TK and IST airport !
But for the passenger point of view : during 5 days...no seat from CPT to BRU with KL/AF or with ET via ADD or via Durban and Jo'burg with SA, BA, LH, LX etc...etc...? I guess it's a little bit special but I'm not at CPT airport right now !

Exactly: it seems to me that TK could have re-booked passengers on other airlines. That would probably have cost them less than five days of hotel nights and meals.

Things are not really improving much at LTBA/IST.

According to FR24, there are currently 90% of arriving flights cancelled. "Only" 67% of those departing but a good number of those not cancelled are somewhat delayed ... by 6-7 hours !
Screenshot 2017-01-09 23.41.39.png
Current Wx is so-so with 0°C and +90% humidity but snow is still in the forecast.

Hope things will clear up or Stij will run short of sunscreen

CPT IST is now departing every day... it always comes in hugely delayed but as the plane normally stays 5 hours on the ground, a lot can be made up...

Weather for the coming days at IST is said to stay above zero with almost no snow... so we still expect to make it home by friday!

We already bought more sun cream and Chenin Blanc...

What was the reason? Is it once more a technical diversion?

I was wondering how long it would take to see that dumb question coming...

Why is that a dumb question? Just because it is an option? When the dreamliner makes a diversion, it very often for technical reasons, whether you like it or not.

Why would the question be stupid? The diversion could as well be medical, or caused by an unruly passenger, or smell in the cockpit, or whatever other reason.

I think the "dumb" part is the fact that I point out the chance of a technical reason more than an other reason for the diversion.

My personal opinion: a medical diversion:
1. they remained af FL400 during the first 15 minutes of their diversion.
2. they stayed on the ground for 2,5 hours: time needed for deboarding a patient and refueling.

The dumb part of your question was the "once more a technical diversion"...

Can you please make a list of the technical diversions you know of the JDL?
