Deccan Air has three Airbus 320 planes to compliment its fleet of seven French-made ATR 48-seater aircraft. It plans to launch four more Airbus 320s in February-March and another four are on option.
Kicking off an era of low-cost nationwide air travel in India, domestic carrier Air Deccan flew a first batch of passengers to New Delhi from southern Bangalore city on tickets priced as low as 10 dollars.
Air Deccan has introduced a basket of fares on its 180-seat aircraft," Gopinath said. "The meter starts ticking at 500 rupees (10 dollars) for early buyers and climbs to around 75 percent of the regular airline fare."
( 30 early-bird passengers pay 500 rupees while 90 seats are available for 5,000 rupees. The rest pay 5,000 to 8,000 rupees for remaining seats. A one-way fare on a main carrier would be 10,400 rupees.)
Air Deccan managing director G.R. Gopinath said the carrier was styling itself along the lines of the Irish budget airline Ryanair and British low-cost carrier easyJet.

And how are they performing ?

I suppose that they are stealing a lot of pax from Air India.

It sounds like a good concept, but isn't 500 rupees allready a lot if not too much for most of the people living in India who are just earning a few rupees a day ?.

Chris there are more Euro-millionaires in India then in Belgium, no worries about the 500 rupees, Chris.
If only 1% of the Indians travel by air that would make a lot. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/fac ... os/in.html
On 3,287,590 sq km live 1,065,070,607 (July 2004 est.) Indians.
1% of 1,065,070,607 = 10,650,706 and the indian LC's have compared to that only few aircraft. As I wrote earlier, India is only emerging in airtraffic, it is only the beginning. Imagine 33% of them would like to take an airplane, all international air traffic would have to skirt around the subcontinent...
