The UA B744 is still on standby in Tenerife.
Chartering an aircraft like that costs a small fortune, so I doubt that they would do it unless there was reasonable doubt about Monarch being able to continue operating.

HNA is named as a potential investor. HNA is investing in anything they could get their hands on as seen by recent stake acquisitions into TP, Cargolux, Azul, Swissport, Gategroup, Carlson Hotels (including the Raddison Group).

Budget airline Monarch has received a 12-day temporary extension to its licence to sell package holidays (ATOL or Air Travel Organisers' Licensing).

The company also said it had secured additional funds from shareholders and was close to announcing its biggest ever investment.

The news came just ahead of a midnight deadline for the renewal of its Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) licence.

Boeing flies to Monarch's rescue with restructured fleet deal

The low-cost airline Monarch is close to finalising a multimillion pound financing package with Boeing, paving the way for its operating licence to be extended by aviation regulators ahead of a crunch deadline next week.

Monarch's deal with Boeing was focused on an order for 45 new planes announced in 2014, and which the US-based group had agreed in principle to restructure.

Under the restructured purchase agreement, Monarch will be able to enter into sale-and-leaseback arrangements for the aircraft, which sources said would free up "significant" cashflow for the carrier.

Monarch announces a US$202.5 million investment from its majority shareholder, Greybull Capital (UK), thus allowing the carrier to renew its ATOL licenses for the next 12 months and fund future growth plans.

The first Boeing 737 MAX 8 will be delivered in 2018.

Is history repeating itself?

Monarch Airlines is in emergency talks to renew its licence to sell package holidays, it is understood. It has until midnight on 30 September to reach an agreement to temporarily extend its Atol licence with the Civil Aviation Authority.

The company faced similar difficulties in 2016, when it was reported to be in poor financial health.

If talks fail, 10,000 of its passengers currently abroad could face uncertainty over their travel plans.

Flight-only bookings would not be affected as they do not fall under the licence.

In a statement, Monarch said: "As previously stated, we continue to work on plans to determine our optimal future shape, size and strategy. Our flights are operating as normal, carrying Monarch customers as scheduled."

"...The ATOL renewal process is on-going and the CAA will conclude the processing of applications from approximately 1300 ATOL holders in the next 24 hours.

In certain circumstances this could require a temporary extension to complete this process.

In line with our usual practice, we will not comment on the specifics of any ATOL holder's application until such time as the process has reached a resolution.

However, we can confirm that ATOL protection will remain available for eligible holiday bookings made with Monarch on Sunday.

The CAA will provide a daily update with regard to the protection that is available to Monarch's customers..."

Qatar Airways is positioning 8 A320s to the UK (4 in BHX, 4 in LGW), on request by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, to be used if Monarch Airlines collapses. That is in addition to two other Qatar A320s already stationed at Stansted.

A Monarch collapse would leave 100,000 passengers stranded. Too many for 10 A320s...

The ATOL licence (to sell and operate package holidays) of Monarch was extended until this Sunday at midnight. But there will be no conclusive confirmation with regards to Monarch talks until early Monday morning.

Monarch passengers travelling tomorrow morning should go to the airport as normal, for the first wave of departures; for later departures, check with the airline.

But the vultures are smelling blood already: British Airways' owner IAG is among airlines circling Monarch's assets amid doubts about the Civil Aviation Authority licence renewal.

Apparently Air Transat has also positioned 4 planes (3x A330, 1x A310) to Bordeaux by request of the British CAA. In addition to 2 Qatar A320's already in the UK another 6 A320's are on their way. In total their are 12 planes foreseen at this point (8x A320, 3x A330 and 1x A310)
