Turkish Airlines Plans to Purchase 36 Airbus and 15 Boeing Aircraft in Its Largest Expansion


ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- Turkey's national carrier, Turkish Airlines, plans to buy 36 Airbus and 15 Boeing Co. passenger aircraft in the largest expansion in the airline's history.
Turkish Airlines said Wednesday it will purchase 15 Boeing 737-800 passenger aircraft, five Airbus A-330-200s, 12 Airbus A-321-200s and 19 Airbus A-320-200s but gave no details on the cost of the new fleet.

This is great news but, why are they getting both 737-800s AND A320s? :?

Seems as if the Airbus narrow bodies were the premium choice of the airline, but Boeing was also granted an order for "political reasons" (Turkey and the USA being close allies).

As BBKing allready mentioned it looks more like a political order.

I would have expected them to buy long haul Airbus planes like before and continuing to buy Boeings for the short haul fleet.

But this being said, I'm not complaining, since we will have more different planes to spot :)
