17/7: AMS temporarily closed due to bad weather

Post by blackhawk »

Due to the storm passing by this afternoon, Shiphol was closed for a while. Winds were coming from all directions, according to NOS (Dutch television) a very rare condition. Were there diversion to BRU?
Also over here pilots had to face the storm. There were windshare reports, some 360's to avoid the weather, the EVA-air had to abort her landing, one plane was even flying so low I could read the reg underneath the wings without binocular!!! Also very nice condensation contrails were created during approach. I love window-spotting :)

I'm just back from my trip to AMS today.
We had superb weather during the whole day but we left a 17:30 because we saw heavy thunderstroms approaching the field.
During a drive back to the south we had to stop the car because it was simply raining to hard.

PIctures and a log of some very nice planes will follow later.

Best Regards,
Yvo

It was a very severe thunderstorm, it past us about an hour ago, very surrealistic. It al happened in a matter of 10 to 30 minutes. 8O 8O
The sky turned pitch black in a matter of minutes and then it turned green. Then very heavy winds/rain and thunders. I took some pics, not the best ones, to give you an impression.

Minutes before the heavy rain started a B747-200F Mega-ark from Singapore Airlines passed at a verry low altitude

Great pictures, they really show how severe it was...

Here in Overijse we had one or two relatively heavy showers and we heared some thunder further away. That's all. For the moment the sky is blue again over here.

Hi Blackhawk,
Were there diversion to BRU?
I mentioned 1 diversion from AMS in the BIAC-timetable some hours ago, a Martinair A320 from Palermo. The flight landed at BRU around 18:55.

There were also a lot of AMS-diversions at Rotterdam. Credits by Marc Marijnissen:
KL 1732 BRUSSELS FK-70
KL 1656 VENICE B737-300
KL 1962 ZURICH B737-800
HV 3248 ALICANTE B737-800
HV 5466 VERONA/VILLAFRANCA B737-700
HV 2124 PALMA B737-800WL
HV 2065 ALGHERO B737-800
And a ferry flight from a VLM F50 with routing RTM-ANR was diverted to Düsseldorf.

Regards, Robin Bamps.
