Heathrow Terminal 2, new Star Alliance hub, to open June 4

Post by sn26567 »

In just a few months, the new Terminal 2 at London’s Heathrow Airport will open, becoming the new home for Star Alliance in London.

Construction on the main building of the new Terminal 2 began in July 2010, just two years after the glitchy Terminal 5 opened its doors to the public. When T2 opens, the size and scope of its operations will rival that of T5, home of British Airways. Airlines from all over Heathrow, primarily Star Alliance members, will be moving their operations into the space. The new terminal will have the capacity to efficiently handle 30 million passengers per year in a “building designed for the 21st century passenger.”

Upon entering the new terminal, 66 self-service kiosks will greet passengers. Unlike traditional airline kiosks, these kiosks will be able to check-in any Star Alliance passenger. Beyond the kiosks, 66 “fast bag drops,” which can also be configured for traditional use, look to speed up the check-in process by heavily relying on self bag tagging when possible. A total of 56 check-in desks, which are capable of handling 3,000 passengers per hour are also available. Twenty-four security screening lanes will also be available at peak times, 17 of which are designated for economy passengers, while four are designated “Fast Track” lanes, and the remaining three are for staff only.

When T2 opens, airlines will move in over a six month period, instead of all at once. United will be the first carrier to move into the terminal, followed by Air Canada, ANA, and Air China 24 days later. Eva Air, Thai, and Turkish Airlines will move into T2 in early July, while the bulk of the remaining carriers (incl. Brussels Airlines) moving in between September and October 2014.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II formally opened the new Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport today.

Representatives in uniform from all Star Alliance member airlines formed a Guard of Honour for the Queen as she passed through the terminal and also posed in front of the brand new building.

Yesterday, Aegean was the 7th Star airline to move to Terminal 2.

When will it be SN's turn?
(Yes, I know, above I wrote Sept-Oct 2014, but is this confirmed?)

You'll find all information about T2 in LHR, as well as the moving dates of each individual STAR Alliance airline on: http://heathrowt2.staralliance.com/

In short: SN is scheduled to move in to the new facilities OCT 15th, same date as SWISS.
