28 May, 2004 - In response to rapidly escalating global oil prices and in line with industry practice worldwide, Malaysia Airlines will, as of 01 June 2004, introduce a surcharge on all regional and international routes. There will be no surcharge on domestic services.
The surcharge is specific to the price of jet fuel and will not be permanent. When oil prices reduce to $37.72 per barrel, and the price sustained for 30 days, the surcharge will be removed. Malaysia Airlines makes this move based on sound commercial logic and necessity and, along with other industry players, hopes the measure will be short lived.
Specifics are:
For travel from Malaysia to Europe, Australia & New Zealand, North & South America, Middle-East and Africa - RM50 per sector
For travel from Malaysia to Asia, including Singapore and Brunei
- RM15 per sector
The above surcharge is applicable for travel ex Malaysia irrespective of where tickets are issued.
For travel originating outside Malaysia, the fuel surcharge will be based on rates imposed by the respective national carriers
The surcharge will be collected at the point of ticket issuance
The surcharge is applicable for tickets issued on/after 01 June 2004, for travel on/after 01 June 2004. No surcharge is applicable for tickets issued prior to 01 June 2004
For Malaysia domestic sectors
- Surcharge is not applicable
The company is taking every step to ensure prudent cost management and increased productivity. It is hoped that the fuel surcharge measure will only be temporary.
