New airbridge at LGW where aircraft pass under

Post by B737229 »

At London gatwick a new airbridge is being opened, linking a new pier with the terminal.

The 2400 ton construction is 30m high, permitting a 747 to pass under it.

Wow this is a very nice and impressive construction.

I think this would be a very nice place for the reg spotters to go to. Depending on the amount of aircraft passing the bridge.

Best Regards,
Yvo

Wow! That is really cool! That bridge would be a great place to spot aircraft! They have one of these at Denver International, but the biggest aircraft that can pass under it is an A320.

I've made a small reaserch and found out that the A380 would not fit under the bridge. I can't understand why they didn't made it a bit taller to make it possible for the A380 to go underneath.

Well, I don't think that LGW will see many A380's compared to LHR. If in the future their might be a few A380's on a daily basis, they will definitely use gates which won't be affected by the bridge.

Shame though! It appears that small details like this are hampering the possibility for airports to accomodate the A380.

Is BRU ready to accomodate an A380 or are there some changes that need to be made then? I don't expect to see an A380 at BRU in the near future, but you just never know...i just keep on dreaming! And i'm still waiting for a regular T7-visit too...

flying regards :plane:

First of all a warm welcome on this website Habs ;-)

A few months ago I was in London Gatwick and I could shoot some pictures of the airbridge:

https://www.aviation24.be/postlite6326-bridge.html

ARUP is the designer of the bridge, perhaps you can find some information via those url's:

http://www.arup.com/europe/project.cfm?pageid=3201
http://www.arup.com/europe/project.cfm?pageid=3204

I am sure other members of luchtzak will gather some extra information to help you in your search ;-)

Security threads, an old topic. Many years ago at Zaventem in the old 1950' terminal, some nets were hung around the passover. I had seen before some africans throwing passports from above to their friends downstairs. Lucky it were only passports of desperate people trying to come to the "rich world" Imagine it were handgrenades. In the same terminal it was funny to see the birds fly around. Another african touch?
At several other airports, access too close to the airplanes from spotter platforms is now also blocked. E.g. some corners at Schiphol are not more accessible and blocked.
I bet the Brittish have made indepth studies about safety measures regarding that bridge. (access, glass,...)
The question remains: why not a Brussels style tunnel?

I would have preferred a bridge in Brussels rather then the tunnel. At least you would have had an excellent view while doing your hike to the A pier.

I agree a 100%, because that tunnel really is ugly
