Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers John Leahy says Airbus will eventually build an A380neo.

“I think the A380neo is inevitable,” Leahy told Aviation Week at the Dubai Air Show. He expects Airbus to introduce the type around 2023, possibly 2022. That would be two years later than the aircraft’s leading customer Emirates would like to see it being introduced. The carrier’s President Tim Clark said at the show that he would like to replace older A380s with the new version from 2020 onwards.

According to Leahy, the A380neo would not only be equipped with new engines. “The stretch is an important part of it,” he says. "It would be around for 20 years,” when the markets continue to grow. Leahy points out that a stretch would not only help in terms of capacity, but also technically: a longer aircraft would require a smaller tail plane for stability, thus could become lighter on a relative basis.

Clark had pointed out that Emirates does not necessarily require the extra capacity per aircraft as long as the A380neo is built, however Leahy believes Emirates is keen to get the extra range that would come with installing more efficient engines on the current-size aircraft.

If the aircraft is to enter service in 2023, Airbus would likely have to firmly launch it in 2017 or 2018 to allow for a 5-6 year product development period.

Leahy is not concerned that the A380neo discussion is making sales campaigns of the current version more difficult, mainly because of timing: Airlines wanting an A380 in 2017 or 2018 will not wait another six years for the aircraft, he argues.

Airbus says an improved A380, with a stretched cabin and improved engines, probably won’t be available until after 2022, while an A380neo must be justified from a business sense.

Airbus aims to seal an order from Saudia for the A380 by pitching a new 615-seat, two-class version. The carrier is evaluating the aircraft.

Amedeo (Ireland) aims to create a used-A380 market by 2018 involving aircraft released from Emirates and Singapore Airlines. The lessor is currently involved in campaigns to find new operators for A380s due to become available second-hand.

A commercial breakthrough in Japan? It seems that ANA intends to buy 3 A380s and deploy them, among others, on routes to Hawaii, a very popular destination for the Japanese.

I wonder whether these aircraft will not be some of the 6 A380s ordered by Skymark before the airlines went bankrupt because it could not pay for them. ANA owns some 15% of the shares of Skymark.

Serial numbers 162 and 167 have been in storage complete with engines, at TLS for some time, since the Skymark bankruptcy. I believe that they will only need to go to the Germany for interiors. Serial number 185 was stopped at partial construction, with parts all assigned, and should be a relatively quick delivery.

Any formal confirmation of ANA operating the A380 soon?
I suppose we wont see it in BRU, except maybe on an occasional PR visit?

ANA has denied reports that parent company ANA Holdings has completed a deal to acquire three Airbus A380s that were repossessed from low-cost carrier Skymark Airlines.

Over the Christmas holidays, reports surfaced in the Nikkei, Bloomberg and Reuters that Airbus had done a deal to sell three of those A380s repossessed from Skymark to ANA.

However, an ANA spokesman told ATW that nothing was decided. The spokesman added that ANA plans to issue its medium-term corporate strategy on Jan. 29.

Airbus CEO Fabrice Brégier at the Airbus press conference today: "I’m proud to announce that in 2015 we booked 3 new orders for the A380 from a customer who's asked us to be anonymous" .

If it isn't ANA, who is it? Any guesses?

Airbus also announced to have reached the break-even point for the A380, with 27 deliveries in 2015.

There were reports of ANA having signed for 3 last week, reports to which the airline did not want to comment to 'prematurely' back then.

Airbus sales chief John Leahy said that, if Airbus goes ahead with the so-called A380neo, it would enter service in 2024 or 2025.

It didn't last long after the lifting of the sanctions: on the sidelines of the CAPA summit Iran announces a provisional order for 8 A380s (and 16 A350s).

Lufthansa (A380, serial 038, recently completed a major overhaul involving 90,000 working hours and a two-month layover. The “IL-check” (no D-checks at Airbus) was performed at Lufthansa Technik Philippines.

The two remaining Air France A380s on order (F-HPJL and HPJM) won't be delivered. The order was switched to A350s.

Emirates is looking to operate its A380 to more cities in India, including Delhi and Hyderabad, once the bilateral talks between the UAE and India are concluded, allowing for more seating capacity to the carrier.

Airbus plans to cut production of its A380 from 2017 as it struggles to revive sales of the superjumbo. The company told its suppliers to slow production to support an assembly rate of 1.7 aircraft per month from 2017.

Turkish Airlines revived its interest in the A380 as it examines options for serving China, India and some European markets. the B747-8 is also under consideration and that the carrier could even take both models. Turkish is in talks with carriers, including Malaysian Airlines for A380s, else it may buy the A380neo if it is launched in time.
