30 April 2004 : something wrong at BRU ?

Post by LX-LGX »

3 flights to BRU were diverted to ANR tonight :

30/04 19:45 Verona EN 2728 22:14 diverted
30/04 19:45 Verona LH 2728 22:14

30/04 21:10 Warsaw SN 2556 21:32 diverted
via Antwerp

30/04 21:30 Madrid IB 7792 21:42 diverted
30/04 21:30 Madrid SN 3728 21:42

Is there something wrong in Brussels tonight ?

Here in Louvain weather wasn't good, I suppose the same for Brussels.

Big Thunderstorm here between 7-30 & 9 this evening - perhaps this is the cause or maybe a runway incident caused by the heavy rain?

Indeed very heavy thunderstorms around.
Also here in near Maastricht. Hailballs with the size of Golfballs came out of the skies this evening so you can imagen why they close a airport if something like that happened.

Most of us probebly know the pics of the Easyjet 737 wich came in a thunder/hail storm and became badly damaged.

Best Regards,

Some diversion came indeed from the more than 40 liters of rain within an hour, and pilots don't like Cb's at all.

What's the preferred diversion from BRU when there's good weather everywhere except in BRU :?:

ANR seems nearest for the passengers, but only small planes can land there.

BTW, very heavy thunderstorm indeed. I saw the cloud from my home and it had a greenish touch. That's the signal of hail. (the greener the bigger)

Fortunately we weren't hit.

Hello,

that's indeed correct. I was one of the crew members of the flight coming from Madrid and after 20 minutes holding, we decided to divert to Antwerpen due to a heavy thunderstorm in the approach path of 25L/R (nice red cell on the weather radar), moving very slowly to the north.
Visual approach in Antwerpen (quite nice on such a short runway), refuel and flight back to Brussels with these 80 pax (flight time 11 minutes, that's a short one!).

Isn't it cheaper to put the passangers on some busses and let the plane fly empty to Brussels?

Well, the plane has to go back to BRU anyway, so why charter a bus?

Thanks for the explanation Memmed :P

As an aviation lover, I would have loved such a divertion. For the price of one ticket you get 2 T/O and 2 landings. Of which one in ANR

flight time 11 minutes, that's a short one
Indeed 8O , at which level did you fly ??

with these 80 pax
That's a good load for an Avro :)
