airBaltic to increase number of flights to Brussels
Latvian national airline airBaltic has announced an increase in the number of flights it will offer from Riga to Brussels during the summer of 2012 – two flights every workday. The schedule for Brussels will start from March 25, 2012.
Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic: "We are glad to increase flights to Brussels the next season flying twice a day. The flights will be operated by Boeing airplanes in order to offer higher quality service to all of our passengers – businessmen, politicians and travelers who use Brussels as a final destination. Now everyone can fly to Brussels and back within one day during the summer saving time and money. ”
Currently, airBaltic is offering eight flights a week. During the summer of 2012, there will be 12 flights a week – a morning and an evening flight on workdays and one flight a day on weekends. The flights will be operated in cooperation with Brussels Airlines.
Blue1: new nonstop routes to Scandinavia in 2012
In line with the 4Excellence strategy with focus on the Nordic region, SAS further strengthens its long term position in Finland. In 2012, Blue1 will open a large number of new nonstop routes from Finland directly to Scandinavia to complement SAS’ and Star Alliance’s route networks and with that strengthen SAS network at Stockholm Arlanda and Copenhagen Kastrup.
Routes to Copenhagen are being planned from for example Kittilä, Kuopio, Lappeenranta, Oulu, Turku and Vaasa as well as to Stockholm from Kokkola, Oulu and Pori.
As already last summer announced, the refocus on the Finland-Scandinavia market will also result in closure of a number of European destinations. Muncih, Amsterdam, Paris and London have already been closed down, Brussels and Zürich will be closed in the spring 2012.
Seriously...BRU and ZRH...two Star hubs and destinations that seemed to perform well... Will they have international routes (except for Scandinavian/Nordic countries) left?
Sad to see these 717's in their nice paints dissapearing... At least I hope SN will re-enter this market...the time between they operated the route themself and the start of the Blue1 routes was far from ideal for Star Alliance travellers...with the transfer through Germany on LH.
A bit a shame that both BRU and ZRH will loose their non-stop Star connection with HEL. Both LX and SN once operated to HEL, but both stopped these routes, with Blue1 stopping these routes, both airports/airlines will have to rely on LH (through Germany) for Star connections to HEL... I hope they will re-start these routes on their own...but of course if that proves to be a bad idea they shouldn't (they stopped these routes for a reason, although Blue1's reason is probably not really that the routes were not succesfull...they were the two most important routes for Blue1 based on 'ASK').
Turkish Airlines once again shows BRU is a bussy destination for them...they are going to increase the frequency on the IST-BRU route from 21 (this winter) and the planned 24 (like in Summer 2011) flights per week to 28 flights per week.
It will be 26 weekly from 25 March to 23 April, going to 28 as from then.

BRU – VCE: 2 daily iso 12 weekly
When I just checked some flights to VCE for October this year, I noticed they have 2 daily flights with 734 and A319...If I remember well VCE was served by Avro's... Is this an aggressive attack to AirOne which will introduce daily A320 in very high density configuration? Because I think it is very unlikely that BRU-VCE can support 3 daily flights with a A319, A320 and 737 combination...
