Negative feedback prompts British Airways to widen seats for 787-9

British Airways is installing a new economy class seat on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner after negative feedback from passengers.

Kathryn Doyle, who works on product development as British Airways’ Aircraft Product Cabin Interiors Manager, is quoted as saying, “Teams have been working on the plans for the cabin interiors, and in particular the evolved First cabin, for two and a half years.

"We’re putting a slightly wider seat into World Traveller. Front-line colleagues shared feedback from customers on the 787-8, who said the seats felt a bit tight,” Doyle says.

That’s some quintessentially British understatement there, with width a frequent complaint about 3-3-3 economy seats on a Dreamliner, and why the 787 has come to be seen by many as an aircraft to avoid.

We listened to that,” Doyle continues, “and challenged our seat supplier to come up with a solution that would achieve parity with competitors and satisfy customers. The result is a seat that is half an inch wider, which we believe will improve customer comfort.

It’s unclear where the extra half an inch per seat – 4.5 inches across the entire row of nine — will come from. British Airways has not yet responded to request for information about where this extra width has been gleaned, nor regarding the measurements of the new seats. There are, however, really only a few options BA can choose from, which have all been tried in the industry previously.

The first option to discount is turning the Dreamliner into an economy class dream by operating an eight-across cabin. The seatmaps that clearly show a nine-abreast cabin dash that hope even more than Doyle’s oblique mention of “parity with competitors”, which does rather sound like “just as terrible as everybody else’s”.

The second possibility is a slimmed-down armrest. This, of course, is viewed by some as a spurious way to claim extra seat width (as Southwest tried to claim earlier this year), and is based on measuring seat width between the armrests rather than at the armrests.

The third possibility is that the airline has reduced the width of the aisles by 2.25 inches each. Regulatory minima for aisles are 16 inches between armrests, yet in reality anything less than around 17 involves a significant amount of hip-to-shoulder contact between passengers walking down the aisle and those seated in aisle seats. Boarding is slowed because rollaboard bags do not fit down the aisle, and service becomes more inefficient because trolleys become harder to navigate (as Air New Zealand discovered when its 2011 arrival of 3-4-3 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which had similar problems). This tension is not new — easyJet and Northwest both plumped for skinny seats and wide aisles on their A319 aircraft for faster boarding reasons — but neither is there an unlimited or consequence-free amount of space to slice from the aisle.

BA tried an ultra-narrow seating configuration in the late 1990s when it converted leisure 777s based in its Gatwick holidaymaker hub to a 3-4-3 layout, but was swayed to reverse its decision after customer complaints.

That BA has now had to modify its economy class in a second aircraft type suggests that it hasn’t learned from past mistakes.

I really wonder if it will make a difference if they stick to the 3-3-3 configuration. I agree with the article above. I avoid 787 in economy class, after an unpleasant experience on Qatar's 787. I would only make an exception for JAL, the only one flying the plane the way it was made for: 2-4-2. I wonder if there will be another airline in the future that hopefully will change it's mind about 3-3-3 on 787...

I'll be trying out the ANA B788 in 3-3-3 in October/November, followed by JAL 2-4-2 in December.
I can't wait to be able to compare, but I have wide shoulders, so can't say that I'm looking forward to it...

That will be interesting to see how big the difference is! I thought one inch less or more would be nonsense, but I was totally wrong. According to seat guru ANA's 787 seats in 3-3-3 are wider than Qatar's, so maybe it will be manageable (I hope for you).

Air India aircraft engineers urged management to defer deliveries of remaining six B787s due to “unaddressed” technical issues with the airplane.

Yes, I know, it's Air India...

Scoot (Singapore's budget carrier) became the first airline in the world to operate an all-Dreamliner fleet when its seventh B787 entered service on 03 September 2015, replacing a B777-200.

Air India being what it is, here is another surprising story...

Air India readies 787 Dreamliner grounded for nine months

National carrier Air India is preparing its second Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner VT-AND for flight after grounding the aircraft in the maintenance hangars for over nine months. The aircraft is recorded to have last flown on new year’s day 2015.

Image

Charleston blues
This is the second case of an Air India Dreamliner being grounded for over nine months. The last one was VT-ANI was grounded for what Air India termed a “reliability improvement retrofit (modification)” from April 2014 to being restored by January 2015. This is also the second case of a long grounding of a Dreamliner built at Boeing’s Charleston, South Carolina assembly line.

VT-AND was the very first airframe assembled at Charleston, and VT-ANI is also a Charleston “early build” airframe.

The Charleston line began with assembly of the 787 and as with any new project it takes time for the equipment, the people, and production process to gel together. Within the industry, there is an opinion, that this is why, early build 787s from Charleston have been a source of trouble to their operators.

Nine months?
Grounding any Rs 800+ crore capital asset for nine months will cost any company a lot of money, and one feels for a financially beleaguered Air India to be hit not once but twice.

Can anyone with knowledge of the matter share what is so wrong with VT-AND that it takes nine months to repair it for reliability? And when one puts the words reliability, repair, nine months and airplane together, it sure raises a lot of questions.

Along with Air India, Hainan Airlines, China Southern Airlines, and Qatar Airways all received Charleston early build 787s. To the best of our knowledge no other airline has grounded its 787-8s for anywhere this long.

Air India’s new Chairman and Managing Director Ashwini Lohani is in the midst of a revised action plan to turn around the beleaguered national carrier. Can he address the torrid time the airline is having with its flagship aircraft?

I think that their resources and spares couldn't keep up with the demanding and challenging nature of operating an aircraft with a lot of teething problems, so the aircraft ended up as donor aircraft and the repair of the donor was deferred to the next C-check.

This is an organisational problem, obviously.
When there is government backing behind with unlimited cash infusions, the level of motivation and moral investment is at a different level than when it's run by private investors.

British Airways will introduce a first class with 8 seats in its 787-9s. Their 787-8s have no first class.

Aeroflot Seeks to Exit Deal for 22 Boeing Dreamliner 787s

(Bloomberg) -- Aeroflot PJSC, Russia’s biggest carrier, is trying to get out of an agreement to buy Dreamliners from Boeing Co. as it seeks planes and routes from a debt-saddled airline and the market struggles in recession.

“We’re trying to exit the deal,” Chief Executive Officer Vitaly Savelyev said in an interview on Rossiya 24 television. “Boeing didn’t deliver them on time and we don’t need them in a slumping market.”

Aeroflot said in June it was scrapping an order for 22 Boeing 787 jets worth $4.8 billion at list price, a rare setback for Boeing, which racked up a succession of deals in June at the Paris Air Show. The U.S. planemaker said in August that it hadn’t received such notification from the Moscow-based airline and is negotiating to deliver the first jet in 2018.

As long ago as 2010, Aeroflot said that it was seeking compensation for development delays to the 787, which entered service three years late in 2011. The delays, combined with changed priorities and market conditions, mean that the planes are no longer a good fit, Deputy CEO Giorgio Callegario said in June.

Aeroflot is instead seeking 34 planes from Transaero Airlines -- including 20 for long-haul flights -- after refusing to buy the indebted competitor, according to Savelyev. It may gain 57 international routes from Transaero, he said.

The carrier is still in talks with leasing companies about prices, he said.
