A headache for Turkish Airlines : 142 cancellations today

Istanbul is not really a city one would connect with cold weather and snow.

Today Turkish Airlines cancelled 142 flights to and from Istanbul and warned of further disruption in coming days as the city braced Wednesday for heavy snow.

Many of the cancelled flights were domestic, but routes to European and Middle Eastern airports including Hamburg, Munich, Milan and Tehran were also hit.

Snowfall is expected to begin on Wednesday and continue until Jan. 2.

More than 1,000 snow-clearing vehicles and other heavy machinery were on standby to try to keep the city's easily clogged road networks open.

Istanbul Ataturk airport was closed for 30 minutes last night. Lots of flights were diverted to other airports. The snow fall has been heavy and the temperatures were around -1C to -6C depend on which part of Istanbul you were. Sabiha Gokcen Airport is also effected. Pegasus, Anadolu Jet, THY and others ended up cancelling lots of flights.

Turkish Airlines will begin a 3 weekly service to Juba via Entebbe, from 26 March 2016, with a B737-900ER.

Source: Airlineroute

Turkish Airlines becomes the first European airline to land in South Sudan, the world's youngest state.

Currently Turkish serves Entebbe every day, via Kigali. Is Turkish will add flights to Entebbe (10 flights a week) ? or Turkish will keep a daily service to Entebbe (3 flights via Juba and 4 via Kigali).

I think that both Entebbe & Kigali will keep a daily service and some flights to Kigali will be operated via Kilimanjaro, like KLM did in 2014 & 2015.

Turkish Airlines cancelled more than 400 flights scheduled on 18 and 19 January 2016 due to heavy snowfall in Istanbul. Not sure whether any flights to Brussels were concerned...

The outgoing TK-1942 to Istanbul (ETD 08h05 this morning) seems to be the only THY cancellation for today.

Agreed b-west, There is always a room for improvement. I am sure they will continue to improve their services as well as their spending for advertising, commercial agreements etc. They are concentrating on North and South American markets and destinations.

While there is always room for improvement (and rest assured, they are constantly working on it), I think you can easily say Turkish Airlines is one of the best airlines in Europe on a lot of aspects.

But as with all big and fast growing companies, they do have some difficulties in keeping the standards up while expanding very rapidly.

Sorry, I've had too many bad experiences with them over the last 2 or 3 years to believe that. They're very good at advertising, but their call center is horribly incompetent, booking an award ticket is a complete mess and if anything goes wrong, you're pretty much on your own. And they still have a rather questionable safety record...

Turkish Airlines is to introduce service from Istanbul to both Bogota and Panama City, depending on availability of aircraft in its fleet.
