Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
It just arrived back on stand (very slowly) with several fire engines following behind.
They dont seem to be focussed on any particular area of the plane, and from here I cannot see any damage.
There are also vehicles running up and down the runway..,looking for debris ?

I saw him depart from my office. He was very low, nothing special as he and Kalitta Air are always low, but his noise was very heavy.
Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
Brussels Airport has confirmed the tailstrike.

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
At around 16h10 or so, I saw indeed a Cargo B 747 fly over Mechelen. There was nothing unusual about it, as I did see other departing aircraft flying over Mechelen this afternoon.
Anyway, it must have been the 747 just minutes after the tailstrike. Glad to see the aircraft got back without any difficulties and everybody got out without injuries.
Nevertheless I'm curious to see what caused the tailstrike.
Best regards,
Ivan

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
Must have dumped fuel over the Nordsea before coming back to BRU ?
Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
For the reg freaks: it was OO-CBA which lifted off at 1601LT and touched down at 1720LT.

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
The new generation of A/C's with glass cockpit have a tail strike indicator (chevron on the primary flight display) wich represents the limit that the pilot can not exceed during the rotation to avoid a tailstrike, they have as well an auto-callout "pitch-pitch" to warn the crew, but i guess this old generation of 747 is still equipped with conventional instrument...
I remember that a 747 in Australia or New Zealand had a tailstrike because the freight was not attached properly and moved during the A/C rotation wich intensify the rotation and caused a tailstrike(if i do remember well because it was some time ago...)

Yes it did!luchtzak wrote:Must have dumped fuel over the Nordsea before coming back to BRU ?
Reason of tailstrike still unknown. Loadsheet was correct
and all the pallets had the correct weight.
Now parked on 906 I think.

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
Let me guess:
-) incorrect calculation/setting or calling-out of Vr?
-) Too enthusiastic rotation?
-) or a sudden tail wind?
Let's hope the crew gets off as well as the plane did.

Air Ella,
Thanks a lot for the photo...Seems like this bird will be out for quite a while.
I'm not a 747 technician, but I can imagine that there must be quite some damage to the APU, to begin with, not to mention any structural damage to the airframe.

Ivan

I hope B Cargo has a good insurance company. Such an incident could knock down the company!

My bet: CBA will be written off.
Time to get the 744F...

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
My thought:
Cargo B is quite lucky that it happend with CBA in stead of CBB. The last one just returned from its D-check. Would be the most inconvenient time to have an incident like this IMHO.
Ps: CBB was charterd for a flight but since it had to fly the route of CBA the freight got trucked to LGG.

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
The damage doesn't look too bad, it is located after the pressure bulkhead....
A couple of aluminium sheet, rivets, stringers, APU doors and sweat and it will be fine...

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
Maybe the BCAA will grant Cargob to operate it the way it is now
Seriously, good thing is that nobody got hurt or injured. Good thing for cargob is that the insurance will most likely pay for an airplane that would have been phased out in December anyways.

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
...peanuts..
....no primary structure has been damaged, they are probably now analysing the SSFDR to retrieve the load applied to the fuselage, but i bet when the guy's will start working on it , it won't last more than 3-4 days to fix it...Boeing probably has the RAS (repair approval sheet) ready(it happened so often in the past)...
thanks for the picture

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
peanuts???
You must be living on a different planet. When you have only 2 B747-200s in service such an event is not "peanuts".

Re: Cargo B Tailstrike
One aircraft is flying the three flights a week to South America. The other a/c is a back up or could be used for ad hoc flights, like this week.
