Dakar participants to fly to South America with Iberia

Post by sn26567 »

- Spanish airline will take 1,800 participants to the world’s top car rally from cities in Europe and Africa to Chile and Argentina, where it takes place
- Iberia operates two return flights daily from Madrid to Buenos Aires and from December until February flies 10 times a week to Santiago de Chile

Iberia will carry the 1,800 competitors, officials, and support staff from cities in Europe and Africa to the 2014 Dakar motor rally, to be held 5-8 January in Argentina and Chile.

To meet the extra demand, Iberia is using its largest aircraft, the 342-seat Airbus A340, and is adding three weekly Madrid-Santiago flights for a total of ten each week between the Spanish and Chilean capital cities through February, 2014.

Iberia’s extensive route network in Europe and Africa and its numerous flights to South American destinations led to its choice to fly the competitors and organizers of the rally. Iberia links Madrid with 29 cities in Europe and 11 in Africa. From its T4 hub in Madrid-Barajas airport, recently voted the world’s third best airline terminal in a Skytrax survey, Iberia flies twice a day to Buenos Aires and once a day to Santiago de Chile, though the Chilean route will be beefed up with three extra weekly flights through February, 2014.

Iberia’s managing director Commercial & Customer Marco Sansavini commented that ‘we are very proud to be the Dakar organisation’s choice to take participants to the 2014 event in Argentina y Chile. It’s very important because of the large number of passengers involved –1,800—and because of the prestige of having the confidence of the organisers of one of the world’s major sporting fixtures.’
