Has Anyone Here Flown on a Convair 340/440/580?

Post by nwa757 »

Hi folks. I was wondering if any Luchtzakers have flown on a Convair 340/440/580. If you have, please post your experiences.

Thanks,
Trevor

Yes I did.
It was a nice experience. An Antwerp-London return in the early 70-ties.
Compared to today, there was almost no traffic.
The view of the both coasts and the North Sea were great as the flight was smooth.
I'm emailing a DAT Convair pilot of that time, to get more on that.

As a Sabener*, I remember also this:
1953 October 14th. Convair 240-12, OO-AWQ S/N: 154
Frankfurt/Main: a Sabena Convair CV-240 lost engine power on takeoff and crashed; all 44 people aboard died.

*This was one of three Sabana fatals in Europe*, the others were the Perk 15/02/1961 707 crash and 13FEB1955, Rome, Douglas DC-6, OO-SDB S/N: 43063, 29 fatal, Crashed while on approach.

In Africa there were:
- 04FEB1952, Kikwit, Belgian Congo, DC-3, OO-CBN S/N: 13450, aboard: 26 fatal and 16 on ground: In-flight failure of a propeller which damaged control cables causing loss of control of the aircraft.
- 18May1958, Near Casablanca, Morocco, DC-7C OO-SFA S/N: 45157, Aboard: 69 and 65 on ground:
The aircraft developed trouble in the No. 1 engine while en route from Lisbon to Leopoldville. While attempting to land in poor visibility on 3 engines the aircraft stalled 80 ft. above the ground and crashed into a building and burst into flames. Pre-crash damage to the No. 1 engine. Poor landing technique by the captain.

More people died in streetcar a Convair hit than oboard.

There is also this Convair crash story: More people died in a streetcar the Convair hit, than in the aircraft.
1960, 17 DEC.
Munich: a twin engine Convair experienced engine failure a few minutes after take-off from Munich/Riem Airport.
The Convair struck the church tower, crashed into mainstreet.
Burning fuel set fire to a tramcar.
All 20 people aboard the plane and 32 tram passengers died.

I'm searching quite some time for more info on this mishap, but this seems some hidden stories.

Is there someone who has photos or links to this episode?
