Belgocontrol statistics: June 2014 movements

Post by sn26567 »

In June 2014 Belgocontrol managed a total of 97,218 movements, representing a 3.2% increase (3,016 movements) compared to the same month of last year (94,202 movements). The Brussels Airport statistics evolve at a faster pace (+8.45%) and the airport’s past month of June was the best since 2008. Traffic controlled by the CANAC 2 control centre evolves positively again as well but somewhat slower (+3.04%). It is the most significant rise in the control centre’s statistics since the beginning of 2014. The results of the regional airports (-0.54%) were overshadowed by diminishing VFR flights (recreational aviation).

It also seems that the steadily climbing air traffic figures have gained a foothold in the whole of Europe (zone of the 40 EUROCONTROL member states) as general traffic in that region increased by 2.4% in June 2014. In the end, the disturbances that plagued air traffic, such as the French air traffic controllers’ strike on a day when a lot of passengers left on holidays, did not impact the growing statistics in the least. The month of June 2014 was even the best in 5 years’ time.

Brussels Airport
In June 2014 Brussels Airport registered 21,540 movements, which represents a 8.45% increase in comparison with June 2013. All types of traffic did well at Brussels Airport, which boasts its best results concerning the number of flights since 2008.

Passenger and mixed traffic (passengers and cargo), representing 87% of total traffic at the airport, were up by 8.72%. Cargo traffic is still progressing, but it struggled somewhat in June 2014 for it rose by a mere 0.76%.

In June 2014 Brussels Airport registered the by far greatest leap in traffic growth figures compared to the other main FABEC airports, and this for the third consecutive time. In the European top 20 of most important airports, we find 8 FABEC airports among which Brussels Airport, which ranks 17th in this list based on the number of departures. Average traffic growth at those 8 airports amounted to 1.66% in June 2014 compared to June 2013.

Air traffic controlled by CANAC 2
The CANAC 2 centre manages all movements in the controlled civil airspace above Belgium, from ground level to flight level 245 and above the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, between flight levels 145/165 and 245. CANAC 2 controlled 50,041 movements in June 2014, or a 3.04% increase compared to June 2013.

In June 2014 the average number of movements at the 14 FABEC control centres was up 2.5% in comparison with June 2013.

The regional airports
In June 2014 the four regional airports altogether recorded a total of 25,637 movements, or a 0.54% decrease compared to June 2013.

The commercial aviation statistics (IFR) show that only the Antwerp airport has suffered a setback (-11.43% or 1,425 movements). The three other airports are doing excellently: the Liege statistics increase by +16.70% (3,934 movements), those at Ostend by +7.21% (2,007 movements) and those at Charleroi by +2.45% (5,569 movements).

As regards VFR traffic (sports and leisure aviation), figures at Charleroi and Liege experienced a setback of respectively 18.70% (3,677 movements) and 12.78% (1,924 movements) while they rose slightly at Antwerp (+3.76% or 4,304 movements) and Ostend (+7.54% or 2,797 movements). VFR traffic (Visual Flight Rules) is mainly composed of sports, leisure and training flights and was hindered by the meteorological conditions the first half of June, because storms and hail succeeded one another, especially during the Pentecost weekend.
Considering the total number of movements (IFR + VFR), Charleroi remains the regional airport that generates the most activity (9,246 movements or -7.16%), followed by Liege (5,858 movements or +5.04%), Antwerp (5,729 movements or -0.64%) and Ostend (4,804 movements or +7.40%).
