Trip report ARN + BMA (17/08 + 18/08/2011) + PICS

Post by Gladko »

Last Wednesday & Thursday I went spotting to ARN and BMA. I left at home (by foot) to Berchem station (which is only about a 20 minutes walk). At Berchem Station I took the train (05:52) to Brussels North and from there I took the Airport Express. I arrived at Zaventem at about 06:51. At Zaventem I then had to wait about 2 hours before my plane took off to Bromma (Brussels Airlines - SN2303). Aircraft was an RJ100, OO-DWI, and I was seated in 20A (last row left). The plane took off on time and landed at Bromma about 15 minutes before ETA. From Bromma I took the shuttle bus (Flygbussarna) to the city center. I had already booked an (return) e-ticket via internet (about 15 euro) so I lost no time here. In the Central Station of Stockholm I first went to buy some food and drink (which was rather expensive but not as expensive as when I should have bought it in Arlanda airport). Afterwards I bought a return ticket for the fast Arlanda Express train (about 50 euro). It brings you in only 20 minutes from the Central Station to Arlanda Airport which is about 40 km north of Stockholm city (I noticed a max. speed of 205 km/h).

I had prepared my trip well and had printed al useful information so I didn’t miss too much time. At Arlanda Airport there are three (free) transfer busses. I took number 10 to the ‘SAS hangaren’. From there it was only a 10 minutes walk to the spotters pavilion at ‘Bana 3’. I stayed at the pavilion for about half an hour but I didn’t find it a very interesting place to take photos : from noon sun is getting in front of you and the background (SAS hangars) isn’t very interesting either. But from the pavilion you can see the two of the three Arlanda stored Caravelles. From the pavilion I could see that airplanes where landing at RWY 26, so I decided to go there. It took me about a 30 minutes to get to the point located at the threshold of RWY 26 (it was very usefull here that I had programmed most of the spotting points in my GPS-watch, because to reach this spotting place you have to go in a small way in the wood). Only one (local) spotter was present. Interesting thing to mention is that the local spotters group have made a small ‘terrace’ (max. 7 persons) at the edge of the wood (even with two garden seats!). So it is easy there to take photos over the fence. I stayed at this spot until 6:00 PM and then went to the other side on some rocks (because of the sunlight). At about 8:00PM I headed back to the SAS hangars to take the transfer bus, but last transfer bus there was at 7:00PM so I had to walk to the police station (about a 15 minutes walk) for an other transfer bus (nr. 14) to the terminals. In the terminals I had a meal at McDonalds (about 12 euro for a Big Mac, a cheeseburger, fries, mayonnaise and a beer). Then I took the transfer bus to my ‘hostel’ (Jumbo hostel – a 747 converted to a hotel) very close to the airport about only 100m. from the southern taxiway. Although the least expensive way to sleep here is in a Dorm room (about 40 euro, you share the room with other guests, men and women separated). I booked a single room (about 78 euro incl. breakfast) in advance and immediately went to sleep.

The next morning I woke up at 5:00AM, had a shower and had breakfast in the 747. I then took the transfer bus 14 to the terminals to buy some food and drink. Because airplanes were departing from RWY 19L at that moment I decided to take transfer bus 10 to the ‘SAS hangaren’ and from there to go to the line-up spot of RWY 19L (near the IBIS hotel). Very good spot, but at 7:00AM the changed the departing runway to RWY 19R. I decided again to go to the spotting spot at RWY 26 (30 minutes walk). Today there were more clouds than yesterday so not al the planes were photographed in the sun, but nevertheless quality of the light was good. At about 11:00AM a serious thunderstorm passed very close south of us, but fortunately we even had no single drop of rain… Two hours later another serious thunderstorm passed to the northeast of us, but again we didn’t have a single drop of rain (but because the thunderstorm passed to the east of us, there were no landings for about 25 minutes). At about 2PM I decided to go back to the terminals because I noticed there were some rain showers coming our way and in the neighborhood there wasn’t anything to hide from the rain or possible thunderstom. Timing was good because when I was almost near the spotting pavilion it started to rain. I stayed for about 10 minutes under the bridge of the taxiway to RWY 19L and then went on the SAS hangars and to the terminals. I took the Arlanda Express back to Stockholm City and the shuttle bus to Bromma. In less than one hour I was taken from one airport to the other !

In Bromma the sun was shining and so I did some spotting there too for about 3 hours. Very close to the airport there is a parking on a hill from where it is very easy to photograph departing and arriving airplanes as well as taxiing airplanes. Unfortunately sun is right in front of you at noon but because you’re on a hill quality of the photos is still good (I experimented with the +/- button of my camera).
The return flight to Brussels (SN2308) arrived 30 minutes too late in Bromma (21:15). We were told this was because of the bad weather in Brussels and that the airport had been temporarily closed at the moment the airplane should depart to Bromma. On top of this the flight to Brussels was expected to have an additional delay of about 20 minutes due to the strong wind. Although the return flight was 100% full no further time was lost during boarding.

The return flight was executed with an RJ85 (OO-DJW) and my seat was 17A (last row left). So finally the airplane landed in Brussels at about 23:10 (40 minutes later than the ETA). This was a big problem for me because I had planned to take the train back home. Lost my connection and the last train to Antwerp… Luckily I remembered that, a few years ago, I had seen that there was a bus connection from and to Antwerp. I went to the bus stops and indeed, I had ten minutes left to take the last transfer bus to the Central Station of Antwerp (ex. by De Decker-Van Rieth; Cost : 10 euro, Dep. 24:00, Arr. In Antwerp : 00:45 & a friendly chauffeur). From there I still had to walk about 4 km to finally arrive at home (01:30 – with some blister on my feet).

Very interesting report, and also useful for spotters at both Stockholm airports.

The cost of the Arlanda express is indeed outrageous, almost more expensive than the flight ticket. The Bromma bus (for a much shorter distance at a much lower speed) is also quite expensive, but I guess that this is common to all goods purchased in Scandinavia.

Quite interesting aircraft to be spotted over there...
