For the sake of clarity: the knife was not wielded by police, as I read the article. Rather the policeman fired at the man who threatened or actually attacked him with said knife.

OK, sorry for causing this small misunderstanding. I did mean to say that the man was shot because he was wielding a knife in front of police.
