The 747 used to fly over me quite a lot, but It was hard to catch because it never showed its position on the radar.

Hi james
I had the A340 on radar on sunday so you might be in luck.

all the best

Hey leedseagle!
First i hope you're having a good Xmas Time!
Here are some tips for your photo:
1. Before taking photos with the scope you have to put it outside at least 1 houre before you start shooting because it needs to be acclimatized.
2. I think your scope's mirror are not aligned (hence you're not able to take sharp photos and you're not even able to get on focus). What you have to do is to well collimate your scope (if you have problems doing this jusk ask).

I hope that with these tips you'll be able to get better shots! For any question i'm here ;)

Have a great Xmas time you all,

Mattia

i have collimated my scope with laser and left scope outside to aclimatise with fan on back but, other than overhead, images are still out of focus on planes with barlow and primary mirror moved up from lowest position three quarter turns on screws next to collimation knobs at back of mirror. What tweeks should i make to focus?

Collimating the scope with a laser can bring you to think the scope is collimated but actually it isn't. It has happened to me. Usually the laser is used only to check if the scope is already collimated or if a new collimation's needed. To collimate your scope my advice is to buy a cheshire eyepiece. It's much more simple than using the laser and you understand what you're doing. With the laser is everything isn't already perfect ( i mean the focuser is perpendicular to the tube and the laser is well collimated) you can get a wrong collimation.
Hope you understand what i mean. This is what already happened to me with a 1000€ equipment (and this is not funny when you spend so much money and don't get results).

Thank you all folks for posting pics or info in the contrail section of this year, hope to see a continuing and/or growing number of nice stuff in 2010.

Here a final one of this year from my side, Dec. 28 another surprising upgrade on the IST-LHR run, ;)

I don't know what plane this is as I'm just starting out with this hobby. Planes fly over my house all the time.

Scarborough is rubbish for plane spotting (well, it's rubbish for everything really!) The only ones I've had any success with have been ones which have distinctive all-over colours and the very rare lower flying ones. My best bagging with lower flying was a Pan Am 747. The only other positive ID was an Aer Lingus aircraft (easy to see with the all over green).

Bempton Cliffs reserve can be OK, I once had a decent view of a KLM 747 there. But otherwise Scarborough is completely boring.
Sabena and Sobelair - gone but never forgotten.
