Why does one plane have contrails in this pic and the other not despite being similar planes at the same altitiude? http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1016462

No pietn, I think you are 100% correct !

I've never seen a wingtip produce a contrail, so they must be from the KC-135 !

OK, Thanks. But why are the contrails from the KC-135 so far from the engines compared to the E-6?

Actually if you compare them, it's almost the same distance.
