Eurowings long haul from Cologne

Post by airazurxtror »

The new Eurowings looks all set for a successful launch of its attractively-priced long-haul services. Three months ahead of its first such flights – to the Caribbean, Thailand and Dubai – Lufthansa’s new budget-fare subsidiary reports promising booking levels.

Eurowings is offering a number of specially low fares to launch its new services, such as Cologne/Bonn to Dubai for as little as EUR 99.99. Further initial long-haul destinations include Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand and several points in the Caribbean such as Varadero in Cuba and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

The new intercontinental services will be operated with Airbus A330-200 equipment. The first two aircraft are already being prepared to enter revenue service at the beginning of November. The Eurowings long-haul fleet will then gradually be expanded to seven Airbus A330s.

The new Eurowings Europe GmbH was founded in Austria on Monday 10 August. The company will serve as the starting point for further growth, which will see the establishment of several more operating bases throughout the European continent. Eurowings Europe is currently setting up its flight operations, which includes creating its own cockpit and cabin crew corps.

Lufthansa CEO says Eurowings and easyJet could be partners

Lufthansa group chief executive Carsten Spohr has told German news magazine Spiegel that he believes its low-cost carrier Eurowings (EW, Dusseldorf) and easyJet could become partners in the future.

With elaborating how the two carriers would cooperate, Spohr said easyJet had already shown interest in the past in working together with Lufthansa Group and that consolidation in the European LCC market had to take place at some stage. The British low-cost carrier did not want to comment to a Reuters request for comment and only said it would constantly look at options to expand its route network without making its operations more expensive or complex.

Lufthansa is currently in the process of restructuring its business with plans to operate all LCC services under the Eurowings brand slowly retiring the germanwings brand instead. Eurowings will launch A330-200 long haul services later this fall with Lufthansa CityLine starting to operate some of the lower yield long haul A340-300 services on behalf of Lufthansa.

As part of its restructuring efforts, Lufthansa has also announced a new management structure that will see the Chief Commercial Officers of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Swiss each taking over functions across all three brands in future. Lufthansa CCO Jens Bischof will oversee sales, Austrian CCO Andreas Otto will oversee product management, Swiss CCO will oversee distribution and revenue management while Steffen Harbarth will be moved to a new Lufthansa role to oversee the carrier's Munich hub as well as marketing for all three carriers.

Eurowings announces three US routes

Eurowings will launch three services to the US from Cologne next year.

The Lufthansa Group subsidiary, formerly Germanwings, will operate A330-200 flights to Boston, Las Vegas and Miami in summer 2016.

Lufthansa will place its LH code on all three routes, reports airlineroute.net.

From May 1, the airline will fly three-times weekly to Miami, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Outbound service EW182/LH5402 will depart Cologne at 1140 and arrive in Miami at 1610. Return leg EW183/LH5403 will leave Miami at 1755 and land in Cologne at 0915 the next day.

From May 4, Eurowings will commence a three-times weekly service to Boston, operating on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Outbound service EW186/LH5404 will depart Cologne at 1340 and arrive in Boston at 1545. Return leg EW187/LH5405 will leave Boston at 1730 and land in Cologne at 0655 the next day.

Also from May 4, the carrier will fly twice-weekly to Las Vegas, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Outbound service EW174/LH5332 will depart Cologne at 1115 and arrive in Las Vegas at 1400. Return leg EW175/LH5333 will leave Boston at 1545 and land in Cologne at 1130 the next day.

Last month, Eurowings announced it will launch a service to Tehran on May 6 (see news, October 30).

A Eurowings A330 (and its 303 passengers) were stuck in Phuket for more than 33 hours, waiting for a repair of a turbine and a speedometer. The difficult learning of long-haul low-cost!
