"Extreme" chocolate sales at Brussels Airport

Post by sn26567 »

Brussels Airport is a busy hub and set a new passenger record last year. But did you know how many tons of the renowned chocolate were actually sold at the airport, and what the most popular destination is? Brussels Airport has launched a quiz that informs you about all kinds of details that don't really matter for the rest, but they can let you find out whether you are an "average" passenger or not.

If you want to score the maximum of 20 points, it may be useful to know that the figures used in the quiz relate to 2013. However, the most recent statistics for 2014 don't really differ very much, Brussels Airport confirmed us.

The quiz offers you 20 multiple-choice questions and can be played in English via this link. If you want to play the quiz and you do not want to cheat in the least, you should not read further, as we can give away some details already - or you can read further and test your short-term memory of course.

860 tons of chocolate sold
Many travellers stop at one of the chocolate shops at the airport to bring some of the renowned Belgian chocolate home. In 2013, no fewer than 860 tons of chocolate were sold at the airport. This equals an average of about 40 grams per passenger if you take into account that Zaventem welcomed some 19 million passengers in 2013.

The figure also equals about 1.6 kilograms being sold per minute. In no other place in the world, more chocolate is being sold per minute than at Brussels Airport. Speaking about food, croissants are another popular item. Some 390,000 were sold in 2013, but this number isn't even close to the number of cups of coffee that are being served every year: some 2 million!

One last statistic: unemployment rates have risen over the past months, and Brussels Airport seems to be quite an attractive employer, considering the number of applications coming in. 2013 saw 27,845 applications pouring in, which equals almost 80 per day. The number also exceeds the actual number of employees at the airport, which was 20,862 in 2013.
