Day trip Schiphol

Post by KriVa »

I'm planning a day trip to Schiphol next week, on Tuesday. Apart from the obvious MD-11 departure(s?), are there any hints or tips I should keep in mind?
As far as I know, a radio scanner is allowed in the Netherlands?
What are the best spots (cfr. The excellent guide in Scramble)?
I have no working knowledge of AMS, which runways are the most likely to be interesting?

Thanks!
Thomas

Best spots IMO are the viewing terrace at the terminal, and the spot along the polderbaan (36L / 18R), where you have plenty of free parking space (official spotters parking), and a completely unobstructed view of the runway (NO fences!), along the entire length of the runway. You can walk the length of the runway, as there's a bike path running alongside. It'll be in use for either landings from the north (18R), or departures from the south (36L). It is almost always in use, and is the airport's busiest runway, with lots of heavy traffic.

I was there 2 weeks ago.
The viewing terrace is for a big part closed due to construction works.
Only View on c and d pier

Enjoy your trip

Hello

Spot Quebec
You can also go to a very good but not that famous spot, next to taxiway Quebec.
At this spot you can take the following type of pictures (not my pictures)
http://planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=1332794
http://planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=1331407

You don't need a stepledder here and the sun is most of the day perfect. The disadvantage is that this point is hard to reach by car. It's very close to a busstop called ''handelskade'' (only 5-10min away from the main terminal)
You will not see all traffic here, only the traffic for the cargo aprons and A,B and C gates (Mainly European airlines park at these gates)

Schiphol East (private jet apron)
Here you have several possibilities to take pictures of parked private jets.
Sometimes a Denim Air F50 or F100 is parked her and government visitors. If you are lucky, you can see some exotic visitors for the Bombardier maintenance hangar.

Hopefully this information was usefull,
Greetings,
All my posted timings are local !

Thanks very much, guys!
I'm planning everything for tomorrow now.
If anybody still has some more info, please do let me know.
Thanks for the "unknown" spots too, TL, spot Quebec sounds like a very nice spot. If we have some time left, which I doubt somewhat, we'll be sure to pass by there!
