The Jan-Jun 2015 cargo surge at Liege Airport

After a great 2014 where cargo volumes grew at more than 5% Liege Airport is again outgrowing the market by showing an impressive growth of 13 % during the first 6 months of 2015.

Liege Airport hereby confirms and reinforces its position as biggest air cargo and logistics hub in Belgium. In cargo, Liege Airport is nr. 1 in Belgium and 8  in Europe; it is also the fastest growing airport within the top 10 cargo airports in Europe.

The traffic increase is showing on all major trade lanes (Asia, Africa & Asia) but a few lanes in particular have grown significantly. For example Turkey cargo volumes grew by 50 % in the first 6 months of 2015, and cargo to/from the Americas are up 75%. Reasons for this are the opening of additional scheduled freighter flights to/from Istanbul, Mexico, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and New York.

Besides being connected to all continents and having a great trucking network all over Europe the main triggers for such growth figures are the tailored services for Liege Airport’s key product groups: Perishables, Pharmaceuticals, Express/parcels and oversized Project cargo.

Also in terms of passenger traffic and belly cargo development, the first 6 months of 2015 have also been remarkably. Since a few months daily flights to and from China and Russia bring in tourists, business men and belly cargo. Secondly, also operational since a few months, BMI launched daily feeder flights into Munich smoothly connecting to Lufthansa’s global network.
