88.65% departures on time in 2016

For the third year in a row, Brussels South Charleroi Airport has beaten punctuality records. According to the OAG Punctuality League 2016 report, 88.65% of flights took off on time from Charleroi, thus placing BSCA third in the international rankings of airports with between 2.5 and 5 million departing passengers. Ahead of Charleroi were one European airport and one American airport: Newcastle (90.94% of departures on time) and Anchorage (89.52% of departures on time).

The punctuality criteria are defined on the basis of flights departing within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. To carry out its study, OAG referred to a minimum of 80% of scheduled flights for an airport. For Charleroi, 95.5% of departures in 2016 were analysed to come to the conclusion that Charleroi, for the third year in row, was in the top 3 most punctual airports in the world in its category.

In 2014 and 2015, Brussels South Charleroi Airport was one of the airports welcoming fewer than 10 million passengers (departing and arriving), both years running. For 2016, OAG divided the category of small airports into two; airports with between 2.5 and 5 million departing seats only, and a second category encompassing airports with a departing seat capacity of between 5 and 10 million.

With nearly four million departing seats available from Brussels South Charleroi Airport, this meant that the airport was included in the first category.

2016 Ranking Airport Punctuality

  1. Newcastle (United Kingdom) 90.94%
  2. Anchorage (United States) 89.52%
  3. Charleroi (Belgium) 88.65%

After a record year in 2016 this recognition, for the third year in a row, was great news for Laurent LEVEQUE, Chairman of the Board of BSCA and Jean-Jacques CLOQUET, the airport’s CEO:

We have been named as one of the best airports, in terms of punctuality, in the category of airports with between 2.5 and 5 million departing seats. This demonstrates once again our airport’s potential and operational force. Despite a difficult year, thanks to the hard work of our employees and our partners, we have once again been able to stay on track and make sure that almost 90% of flights took off on time. We should be very proud of everybody’s hard work, and this is bound to inspire us to continue to strive to grow our airport and its activities.
