A new milestone has been reached at Bordeaux Airport which is now celebrating its five millionth passenger of the year. A new record in passenger numbers has been set for the airport: 1 million more passengers in 4 years. A passenger on the 2.50pm flight to Lyon with the Hop! Air France airline was drawn from a hat to symbolise this historic 5 million passenger mark.

To celebrate the event, the five millionth passenger was welcomed by Pascal Personne, President of the Board of Directors of Bordeaux Airport and Bénédicte Pellerin, South West Regional Director of Air France. The lucky passenger won two tickets on the direct Bordeaux-Rome flight operated by Hop! Air France and a “Croix de Guyenne” magnum box, the airport wine.

The one-million passenger milestone was reached in Bordeaux in 1980, the second in 1988, third in 2000 and again in 2005 and the fourth in 2011. Just four years were enough to attract an additional 1 million passengers, with the 5 million mark reached in December 2015. The growth in international traffic with the influx of low-cost carriers and the development of airline networks in international hubs (such as Amsterdam, Istanbul, Lisbon, Madrid and Paris Charles de Gaulle) has undoubtedly contributed to the growth of the airport which has posted a rate of +33% since the 4 million milestone was reached.

Pascal Personne said, “This is an opportunity for all of us, the professionals at Bordeaux Airport, to send five million thank-you’s to our passengers. Over two thousand people work every day to accommodate an average of 190 daily aircraft. If you are passing through the airport terminals today, all staff in airport companies will be wearing a specially designed thank-you badge. Thanks to you, the airport has undoubtedly contributed to the rapid growth* of our great region.”

In November 2015, passenger traffic was up 3.7% compared to November 2014, bringing cumulative growth to 8.1%. International traffic increased by +8.5%. International destinations with the highest growth in November were Barcelona (+39.3%), London Stansted (+27.8%), Istanbul (+ 19.9%), Basel (+ 18.8%) and Amsterdam (+17.7%). Passenger traffic in France rose slightly by +0.8%.

Also this month, note the announcement of new routes by easyJet in 2016: Berlin, Barcelona, Venice and Marseille.
