8.4% growth in February, just a few weeks from the start of the summer season.
Bordeaux Airport records a +8.4% increase compared to February 2015, or 351,300 passengers. This rate, above that recorded in January and boosted by the 13,800 extra passengers on 29th February (+4%), places Bordeaux Airport in a very strong position. International traffic remains the main growth driver (+10.2%), while domestic traffic also increased at a steady pace (+7.2%). February was further impacted by the 42nd Jumping International event – Bordeaux has been the French stage of the sports fixture for more than 30 years. The event attracted more than 50,000 visitors over the three competition days.
Scheduled international flights stimulated the airport’s activity, with growth of +9.7%, or 130,750 passengers. The performance of the airport’s two main international destinations substantially contributed to this upturn:
– London (British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair) +10.6% and 24,500 passengers
– Amsterdam (KLM, easyJet) +21.3% and 17,300 passengers
The international hubs also report spectacular performances: Casablanca +24%, Istanbul +17.8% and Madrid +4.8%.
The prize for the greatest gains goes to Punta Cana (XL Airways) with double the traffic of 2015, Tenerife (Volotea) with +56.7%, Barcelona (Vueling, easyJet) +54% and Milan (easyJet) +37%.
Scheduled domestic traffic registered a sharp rise of +7% (216,400 passengers). A trend corroborated by linking destinations: Lille (+15.4%), Nice (+20.1%) and Lyon (+6.8%), operated by airlines HOP! and easyJet.
No lagging for traffic to Paris with growth of +5% for the Charles–de-Gaulle hub and +3.1% for the Orly Shuttle.
Also of note is the intention by Chalair to develop its national destinations rapidly. The airline has 4 destinations in Bordeaux: Brest, Rennes, Montpellier and Caen.
Low cost traffic contributed to growth with +13.3% (124,300 passengers) in February. The three leading airlines in terms of volume are easyJet (86,316 passengers, +13.1%), Ryanair (19,130 passengers, +6.6%) and Volotea (7643 passengers, +31%).
