Flight operations at Berlin SXF and TXL: Increasing passenger numbers and top safety ratings

In August, 2,689,282 passengers took off and landed at Berlin’s Schönefeld and Tegel airports. This represents a growth of 3.8 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. In August, 735,296 passengers were recorded at Schönefeld (+8.5 per cent) and 1,953,986 passengers at Tegel (+2.1 per cent).

The number of flight movements in August amounted to a total of 21,940 take-offs and landings, which represents an increase of 1.2 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. At Schönefeld, the number of flight movements amounted to 5,877. This corresponds to an increase of 0.1 per cent compared to the previous year. At Tegel, the number of flight movements increased slightly (+1.6 per cent) compared to the previous year. A total of 16,063 flight movements were recorded at Tegel in August.

Karsten Mühlenfeld, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Schönefeld and Tegel airports are not just very successful airports, as the increasing passenger numbers verify month after month; they are also very safe – in fact, above average compared with other German airports. Exceeding the already extremely high standards in Germany is quite an accomplishment. The findings of the latest study by the pilots’ association Cockpit are, however, no reason for us to slacken our daily efforts. They are an incentive to continue to do our utmost for our passengers.”

A total of 19,122,825 passengers used Schönefeld and Tegel airports from January to August, which represents an increase of 4.2 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.

At Tegel, 13,870,452 passengers were recorded from January to August, which is 1.9 per cent more than in the same period the previous year. Schönefeld Airport at the same time handled 5,252,373 passengers, which is 10.8 per cent more than in the comparison period in 2014.

The number of flight movements all together from January to August rose to a total of 169,786 take-offs and landings, which represents an increase of 1.5 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. At Schönefeld, the number of flight movements increased to 47,837. This corresponds to an increase of 2.9 per cent compared to the previous year. At Tegel there was an increase of 1.0 per cent compared to the previous year. A total of 121,949 flight movements were recorded at Tegel from January to August.

Air freight at Schönefeld and Tegel airports in August amounted to 3,554 tonnes, which represents a decrease of 10.6 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.
