Berlin Brandenburg Airport will not open in 2017, several German media reported yesterday.

The opening of the airport -planned in 2010/2011- has been postponed several times mainly because of technical issues concerning fire protection installations. Since then the costs of the project have been doubled.

A few months ago Dr Karsten Mühlenfeld, Chairman of the executive board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH said they would pursue the goal of opening BER by the end of 2017. Now a new problem occurred, this time with the electrical engineering. Hence Berlin Brandenburg Airport eyes an opening early 2018.

Brandenburg has been built to replace three airports serving the German capital – including the existing Berlin Schönefeld Airport on which the new facility is based, which sees Berlin Brandenburg Airport handily located just 18 kilometres south of central Berlin. Now the much smaller airport of Berlin Tegel will remain open until further notice.
