airberlin started off the year with a significant increase of its capacity utilization (RPK/ASK) in January by 2.3 percentage points, i.e. to 80.6 percent, as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, while at the same time consolidating its capacity.
Stefan Pichler, CEO of airberlin, stated: “This favorable capacity utilization figure demonstrates a seamless continuation of the increasing capacity utilization witnessed in the second half of 2015. We are doing everything we can to continue this positive trend in 2016.”
As a result of the capacity reduction, the world-wide number of passengers traveling on airberlin in January 2016 decreased by 7.4 percent in yearly comparison, to 1,569,175 passengers. Consequently, the available seat kilometers (ASK) were reduced by 10.2 percent, to 3.479 billion kilometers. In the first month of 2016, airberlin’s passengers traveled a total of 2.805 billion kilometers (RPK) within airberlin’s global flight route network, i.e. a decrease of 7.6 percent in yearly comparison.
